Absolute Cold War Must Read

Sobering ,ultimately inspiring, highly detailed account of the indomitable Lt. Vicktor Belenko and his astonishing 1976 air escape from the Soviet Empire.... via the Empire's own top secret MiG 25 FOXBAT fighter. Beginning with a harsh, grim account of Soviet life in the 1940's and 50's to Belenko's quick rise thru the Red Air Force in the early 70s up to his difficult realization that defection or death was his only choice to escape Russian Communism and live life as he believed it was meant to be lived - in a freedom only the West could provide - John Barron spares nothing in relating Belenko's tale....a book that should be required reading in every high school and college in America.

Great book, highly encouraged reading for students

This has been one of the best books I have read recently. While it is about a MiG pilot, it is also about life in an extreme socialist world and what the society we have taken for granted looks like to a person coming out of it. The book covers the pilot's life in the Soviet Union and the military, and then covers his introduction to US society and even the US Military.
It was said elsewhere that Yeltsin knew the Cold War was lost when he went to a random grocery store.
I do recommend this book for students, especially those that lean toward hard socialism, yet have never actually experienced it but think it would be their current life with even more abundance.

What a Tale

A plot in real life with Hollywood written all over it - but, alas, Hollywood wasn't interested in the story of a man's quest to live free. I marveled as Viktor sampled typical American life and was astounded at what he found. I hope he's still alive and well here.
