New Chart - a welcome publication

There’s no doubt about it, GPS navigation is firmly established on Lough Corrib as an excellent aid to navigation, but the boat owner must bear in mind that electronic systems are an aid to navigation – not a sole replacement – and it is always wise to equip yourself with a paper chart and keep looking out the window!
Traditionally, the only paper chart available for Lough Corrib was a large sheet of paper printed in black and white, based on British Admiralty data of 1846.
All this has dramatically changed recently!
A few days ago, a hardcover edition of Trevor Northage’s “Lough Corrib Chart Book” arrived in the post from Amazon. All activities were put on hold, while we poured over eighty wonderful full-colour pages of general and pilot charts.
The Lough Corrib Chart Book is a stunning piece of work. It is both extremely functional and informative, a very beautiful production that has taken six years of daily surveying to bring to print. There are helpful sections explaining the new IALA marking system and illustrations of Cardinal marks and Isolated Danger marks which appeared on the lake for the first time in 2013. Some interesting myths are dispelled too – there are actually 1,332 islands on the lake – not 365 as has been bandied about for years!
There is something about a paper chart. It think it imprints on your brain in a completely different way from the GPS screen. You can be motoring past Rabbit Island on your starboard side, and a mere glance at the chart will register the white monument (128), followed by a crescent of three green markers and the paired red/green ‘gate way’ at 130 & 137. It seems to form a more lasting memory, compared to the GPS which constantly draws the eyes towards the screen for reassurance.
I am so looking forward to the next boating season when I can tie up on the lovely anchorages marked on the charts or cruise up a yet unexplored stretch of river - nothing compares to listening to the dawn chorus from the comfort of your bunk on the Cornamona River! And finally, I will enjoy teaching my grandsons to navigate this wonderful inland waterway – from a chart like my father taught me – BUT from a Chart Book that leaves no stone unturned.
