About the Author
Mordechai Nisan taught Middle East studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is a prolific writer on Zionism, Islam, and Arab history; minority peoples and pluralistic states; Lebanon, American foreign policy in the Middle East; and the intractability of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

A must read

"The political debate in Israel, as to whether an independent Palestinian state would be a blessing for Israel or a curse, is more of a self-contained monologue than a dialogue with ideas and adversaries. The paradigm of the two-state solution has closed all debate." These powerful words from Mordechai Nisan describing the political reality in Israel, is what this new book, "Only Israel West of the River", is trying to overcome.
In a concise 151 page book Nisan manages to analyze various aspects of the Israeli-Palestinian issue with clarity and understanding that is illuminating. Rather than ignoring or glossing over difficult issues, Nisan tackles them in a way that is direct and honest without being abrasive or confrontational. Agree or disagree with his analysis, it is evident that he is being intellectually honest.
His goal is to change the paradigm of how Israel deals with the Palestinian issue since he believes that the closed debate regarding the two-state solution is detrimental to Israel's future. He writes, "It is the responsibility of government and the creativity of its leaders to address a problem in a spirit of realism; the threat emanating from the problem can catalyze energies to formulate a solution. Inasmuch as Israel's very existence is threatened by the Palestinians (and their Arab brothers and allies), there can be no resolution without a sound accounting of the immediacy and urgency of the problem." In this realm he believes that Israel's politicians have failed; they have not honestly addressed the problems and therefore they have not provided proper solutions. Still further, he claims that the way Israel deals with this issue will ultimately have an effect on Israel itself. "For how Israel deals with and treats the Palestinian problem will indicate what kind of Israel will emerge along the political highway of its future."
By trying to change the paradigm, it is obvious that Nisan wants to assure a healthy future for Israel. In this regard he envisions Jordan, with its 70% Palestinian population, eventually becoming the hoped for Palestinian state alongside an Israel having complete sovereignty west of the Jordan River. This he sees as the only realistic solution that can bring stability to the region. In this vein he bemoans the current way of thinking which only perpetuates the problem. Nisan writes, "It is difficult to make the argument that Jordan's survival in its present constitutional character carries greater moral weight than the political rights of the Palestinians and the region's need for reconciliation and stability." He then adds "Hashemite regime survival cannot be a more legitimate imperative than Palestinian national self-expression and political rights."
For anyone who is genuinely concerned about Israel and the Palestinians yet tired of the usual rhetoric, this book is a must.

A Manifesto for Israel's Survival

Had a book entitled Only Israel West of the River: The Jewish State and the Palestinian Question been published a year ago, it would have been received as another offering of the Israeli right. Today the West stands idly by as the Assad regime slaughters Syrian citizens on a daily basis. NATO's "victory" over two-bit Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi has created a swath of instability from Tunisia to the Israeli border. The sight of 83-year-old Hosni Mubarak, who seven months ago ruled over the Arab world's most populous and well-armed nation, being wheeled into a cage in an Egyptian courtroom, illustrates just how volatile the situation is. With the Arab world on the verge of chaos and the Iranian A-bomb becoming closer to reality each day, this newly published book by Mordechai Nisan reads like a manifesto for all who care about Israel's survival, Jews and non-Jews alike.
In this compact but comprehensive volume, Nisan, who taught Middle East Studies at the Hebrew University for 35 years, covers the basis of Jewish nationhood that led to the rebirth of Israel, the conflict with the Palestinian Arabs and the greater Muslim world. The author argues that while Israel is constantly delegitimized in global forums and by the international media, it is in fact, the very model of national legitimacy. No other nation possesses a "transcending historical plan and the written chronicles of nationhood," he thunders, referring to the Bible and its massive influence on the history of humanity. Answering the charge of racism often hurled at the Jewish State, Nisan shows how the Jewish people, who have been its greatest historical victim, have created a multihued mosaic based on a shared Jewish identity. Throughout the book Nisan's cogent arguments are backed up by factual examples of a seasoned political scientist. Taking issue with those who would transform Israel into just another postmodern multicultural state, he demonstrates that "'Legal Israel' is tolerant and accommodating of non-Jews though `Real Israel' is compactly a native Jewish enterprise with profound historical and emotional bonds among its covenantal members."
Nisan confronts the conflict's most explosive issues, Jerusalem and the settlements, head on in separate chapters. A Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem would become a safe haven for terrorists while facilitating the flooding of the Western Jewish half of the city with returning refugees. It would constitute "an astounding victory for Islam, Arabism and the Palestinians." Despite opposition from Israel's political elite and the international community, tens of thousands of mainstream Israeli citizens of all cultural and social strata now inhabit the settlements in Israel's historical heartland offering a security perimeter to Tel Aviv while constituting an impediment to Palestinian statehood. His message is summed up in one powerful sentence: "Under no circumstances should Israel submit its most essential national interests to the whims of foreign powers, ideas or trends."
Finally, Nisan offers a forceful and original idea that weaves together his logical arguments showing that the creation of a Palestinian State west of the Jordan River would almost certainly bring about the demise of Israel: the dualism of two-states inhabiting a small territory will not lead to peace but to endless conflict. "The `one state/one people' paradigm is the only way to ultimately transcend and resolve the historic Jewish-Arab rivalry in the Land." Nisan concludes.
As the September vote for Palestinian statehood at the United Nations approaches, Only Israel West of the River should be required reading for misguided world leaders such as former Brazilian President Luiz In�cio Lula da Silva, who spearheaded Latin American recognition of a Palestinian State, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, and yes, even for US President Barack Obama. For all who believe that a two- state solution will magically bring peace to the region and help stabilize a world on the brink of chaos, this book is a must.

Is life so dear or peace so sweet..?

As I read Professor Nisan's compact and hard-hitting book on why Israel must reject any further land-for-peace deals with the Palestinians, the words of Patrick Henry - the hero of the American Revolution - ring in my ears. "Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death."
Professor Nisan makes it crystal clear that Israel must never give up another inch of Israel simply in the hope that the Muslims will like them better and keep their word to be better neighbors. Like the Professor vividly points out, the Israelis must learn from Gaza. As I suggested to Benjamin Netenyahu and the Professor by email, all future land-for-peace talks should be held atop Masada or at the Auwschwitz Death Camp in Poland, because those two venues scream to the world, "NEVER AGAIN!"
