I have mixed feelings about Manu by Christopher Nicole. He is to be congratulated on feeding in the history prior to the Maharani of Jhansi’s rebellion. He is also to be congratulated on his heroine, Emma Hammond, who in 1849 is destitute after her missionary husband’s murder. Unable to return to England where she would be jailed for her implication in a housekeeper’s murder, she accepts the extremely well-paid position of governess to Manu, the Maharaja of Jhansi’s child bride.
Christopher Nicole’s Emma is a voluptuous woman who is a sensation at the Hindu court. The problem is that she is frequently ordered to strip and becomes accustomed to being naked. I found her immediate, blas�, matter of fact acceptance of this, of homosexuality and lesbianism unbelievable in a Victorian woman. Nevertheless, I admire Emma for her refusal, regardless of the consequences, to spy for the East India Company and her unwavering loyalty to the maharaja and her pupil
At first the relationship between calculating, resourceful Emma and Manu “a wild and wilful girl” is tempestuous as the political situation worsens and foreshadows the Indian Mutiny.
I would have liked more detailed descriptions of the palace, the food and the surrounding countryside.
