Significantly, writes James C.Scott in this iconoclastic study, these people are not innocent who have yet to benefit from all that civilization has to offer; they have assessed state-based civilizations and have made a conscious choice to avoid them. The book is essentially an anarchist history , the first-ever examination of the huge literature on state-making that evaluates why people would deliberately and reactively remain stateless. Among the strategies employed by the people of Zomia to remain stateless are physical dispersion in rugged terrain; agriculture practices that enhance mobiliy; pliable ethnic identities; devotion to prophetic, millenarian leaders; and maintenance of a largely oral culture that allows them to reinvent their histories and genealogies as they move between and around states. The Art of Not Being Governed challenges us with a radically different approach to history that views events from the perspective of stateless peoples and redefines state-making as a form of internal colonialism. In contrast to the Western ideal of the social contract as fundamental to state-making Scott finds the disturbing mechanism of subjugation to be more in line with the historical facts in mainland area studies that will be applicable to other runaway, fugitive, and marooned communities, they Gypsies, Cossacks, tribes fleeing slave raiders, Marsh Arabs, or San-bushmen. In accessible language, James Scott, recognized worldwide as an eminent authority in Southeast Asian, peasant, and agrarian studies, tells the story of the peoples of Zomia and their unlikely odyssey in search of self-determination. Along the way he redefines our views on Asian politics, history, and demographics, and even our fundamental ideas about what constitutes civilization.

About the Author
Frederick Copleston (1907-1994) grew up in England. He was raised in an Anglican home but converted to Catholicism while a student at Marlborough College. He later became a Jesuit and then pursued a career in academia. He studied and lectured at Heythrop College and wrote an eleven-volume History of Philosophy, which is highly respected. He also spent time teaching at Gregorian University in Rome and, after he retired, lectured at Santa Clara University in California. He was appointed a member of the British Academy in 1970. He is famouse for debating Betrand Russell over the existence of God in a 1948 BBC broadcast.

Review of Copleston's Ninth Volume

I'm a student, not a scholar, but I have read all nine of Copleston's volumes, so I understand the scope and style of his writing.

This volume covers a very broad range of topics. Not only does it discuss the giants like Comte and Sartre, but it also discusses about a dozen miscellaneous French trends and their proponents. Discussing small-time philosophers is common for Copleston, but this volume is more impressive than usual.

I regret that Copleston mentions nothing of Derrida and only references Focault in passing, but one could hardly expect him to wait forever--these philosophers were still developing their outlook in his old age. Also, I noticed several editing overlooks, so many so that I'm mentioning it here. It won't subtract from your overall enjoyment, but it is annyong when encoutered.

To start and finish Copleston is an amazing expreience, and I recommend it to any avid amateur in philosophical history.

The Best Introduction of Philosophy Out There!

Copleston's series, "The History of Philosophy", is quite possibly the best introduction to the history of philosophical thought that has ever been published and certainly the best currently in print.

You will be hard pressed to find a better collection of solid philosophical surveys in one place. The beauty of the series is that Copleston has clearly done his research on each period and each thinker of Western philosophy.

I cannot recommend this series any more highly. It is a must-have collection for anyone who is a scholar (professional or casual) of philosophy, theology or any of the arts.

Good to the end

I started collecting the individual volumes of Frederick Copleston's "A History of Philosophy" more than 45 years ago when I was an undergraduate. In the nearly half century that has passed since my undergraduate days, I have referred to Copleston's multi-volume history more than to any other survey of the history of philosophy. Not only does each volume give a detailed survey of the period, but it is relatively unbiased as well. Copleston does an excellent job of not allowing his own perspective to stand in the way of an objective description of the views of the philosophers he discusses. This is as true of Volume 9, which covers philosophy in the first part of the twentieth century, as it is of the previous volumes.

Copleston spends a considerable amount of time in this volume discussing the French philosophy of the period. Beginning with Comte, he traces its development to Sartre. His detail explication of Sartre is fair and balanced, and even his criticisms, though sometimes pointed (and almost always right on the mark), are guarded. All in all, he does a great job of keeping his own perspective, which is certainly much different from that of Sartre, in the background. (Copleston was a Jesuit, by the way.)

This volume also includes a discussion of the philosophy of science, particularly as it has been developed in the Anglo-American tradition (though with a clear debt to its Austrian heritage). Although not as thorough as his discussion of Sartre, it is certainly adequate.

Copleston is no lightweight when it comes to his writing. Reading him requires commitment of time and energy. But for the reader willing to expend these resources, it will prove most rewarding.

Extremely High Yield! Perfect for residents!

This book is a must have for radiology residents! It is well organized, very high yield and a quick read (only 230 pages)! The chapters are based on anatomy (hand, shoulder, c-spine, knee, etc) and contain high yield check-lists at the beginning of each chapter that include (common sites of injury in adults and kids, where to look when you see something obvious, where to look when you see nothing at all, easily missed fractures, etc). The checklists are a nice feature and provide a quick snapshot of all key points. There are also plenty of images and diagrams and illustrate the main ideas. I highly recommend this book as a reference on your ER rotation, especially if you take call in a major trauma center. I used it everyday during my emergency radiology rotation and will definitely keep it by my side during night float.

Although dramatically different from Lee Rogers' previous encyclopedic 2-volume treatise on fractures, I think this is perhaps the best introduction to the imaging of skeletal trauma extant and I intend to make it the primary text our residents read before going on call.

Great Story - Worth Reading

This was a much better book than I expected - but then again I am an engineer of the same age as Steve Jobs, went to the same elementary school as Steve Wozniak (four years later) and grew up in the same Cherry Hill West subdivision of Sunnyvale, CA. that both of them lived in. So I was perhaps better able to relate to some of the things that the book talked about - I even had the same chemistry teacher, Dr. Hubbs, at De Anza College who is mentioned in the book. It brought back a lot of memories of that time and place in 1960's Silicon Valley life.
I found it appropriately technical but not too geeky. Also very honest and straight forward. In my opinion, an even better book than the biography of Steve Jobs by Walther Isaacson - which is also worth reading but a more definitive work.
Steve Wozniak focuses most of the book on his childhood, youth and early adult life & relationship with Steve Jobs up to the time when Apple Computers gets up and rolling. That story alone would have made the book worth reading.
After that he skips a lot of detail and talks more about his person life, marriages and things he did after his full time involvement with Apple. When you are all done you come away feeling like you know the person Steve Wozniak.
You also realize that without Steve Jobs, he would have just spent his life being a super-geek company man making a mid-six figure salary working for Hewlett Packard. And without Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs would have probably become a B-list, new age cult leader living somewhere in Santa Cruz.

Woz, the real Man Behind Apple and It's values

Woz tells the story of his whole life with such candor and believability. You get to know him based on his stories and the way tells them (From the heart). I can honestly say I have a good feeling for who he is as a person, after reading his book.

This is the guy behind Apple, he is the genius behind the Apple and the Apple II. These products were the first that set the trend for Apple's easy-to-use, customer friendly products. Without him, there is no Apple. Period.

Woz doesn't gossip much about Jobs, he does talk about their friendship and business dealings. Woz really stepped back more or less after the Apple II. He truly believed that creating personal computers was an art as much a science. Having taken a digital electronics course, I have some appreciation for what his skills were and he is an incredible man. He had some serious talent for sure. He talks about his whole life, his dealings with Apple are only a part of that. Much of his previous work certainly built up to that and you can see him build up to it. His life story is awesome, this book is a page turner and easy to read.

If you like Apple, autobiographies, little bit of counter-culture, electronics or genuine guy you will love this book.

I was in the time but never met Woz.

I am an engineer and lived through the same time. I even worked for HP for 25 years.
I binge read this book and couldn't put it down because i was connected to the time, the vocation and had some identification and some differences. It was a very personal read.

The book had a strange voice to it. A kind of childish repeating - even literally repeating quality.
The authors concern seems to need to explain in simpler terms some of the technical issues.
I actually would have liked to see the details as I could probably understand them. Perhaps an appendix.

All in all I liked the book and the person and hope some day to meet Woz as I think we share some similarities and differences.

It seems my favorite authors do have books that I just don't like. Earlier this week I read Nichole Chase's Accidental Assassin and that was a major disappointment for me. This book has also turned out to be a huge disappointment.

It was cheesy. I feel like I was reading some unedited crummy story by an inexperienced no-name writer. And boy does that sound harsh. But it's true. I was not impressed. Not at all. This book just doesn't measure up to Jeaniene Frost's level of writing. She has written some marvelous books that I LOVE, but sadly this novella is not one of them.

You know those kindle books you can get for free on Amazon? The ones that you know are gonna be terrible because everything in the way of presentation of the book just screams terrible? But you read it anyway, hoping for something to sate your idle cravings or boredom between books. This novella is like that.

I hate sounding so harsh, but I feel as though I must be honest because I know Jeaniene can do better. I've read better works by her. This must be some sort of blip in her track record. Hopefully Her next book will be better.

Way too short even for a novella. The heroine was filled with angst and then suddenly loves the guy out of nowhere. It was a good start but then it tanked. Drat! Not worth 2 dollars.

but I would still love to see a full length novel about Marlee and ...

This book was originally part of an anthology. However, I went ahead and purchased it because there are extra scenes in this version and ever since this story came out as the anthology I have hoped that Jeaniene Frost would expand upon the story. I felt that I got more closure now an that the story did not just abruptly end, but I would still love to see a full length novel about Marlee and Daniel. Or even other characters in the pack.
