The Thinker's Guide to Eating Your Way to Health

Holford and Burne provide an outstanding approach to using food as medicine. And why not? After all, what you ingest affects everything you do.

The book is a real eye opener about the use of everyday foods as medication. Personally, pointing out the dangers of the various types of medication for depression, heart conditions, anxiety, Alzheimers, diabetes and other modern diseases is preaching to the converted. Anyone choosing to read this book will already be interested in a drug-free approach to better health.

The strength of the book lies in its ability to explain complex information in easy-to-understand English and to make the reader think, "I can do that". It is difficult not to be enthused about discovering curative and preventative drug-free medication possibilities; the solution is as near as the nearest supermarket shelf.

On the other hand, with the explicit and detailed information on vitamin supplementation that the book provides, there is the very real possibility that an enthusiastic reader might actually go over the top in self-'medication' on the principle that if 200mcg of supplement is good for you, then 600mcg will be three times as good....

So, a fascinating read. Does it work? I am trialling some of the suggestions for a couple of conditions I have and they seem to be working very well indeed.

But even if you only found out how to control insulin spikes at meal times so that your body would not convert a lot of your food intake into stored fat, then the book will already have paid for itself several thousand times over (if, indeed, one can put a dollar price on life and good health).

Beware: not the real thing

The description says "Printed on tear-resistant, water-resistant synthetic paper." It is not. The book I received was printed on regular paper from scans or photocopies of the original and bound by rings with front and back covers made of laminated color copies of the front and rear pages. The inside pages are all cheap black and white regular paper.

I am a former SOF medic, and I have copies of the first edition of this book that are wonderful: printed on Tyvek paper that is rainproof and durable. Don't get me wrong: the content of the book is excellent and better than anything else you will find on the topic (but it is not written for an amateur, you need to have some medical training to make full use of it). I was more than willing to pay $60 for the updated 2008 version of this reference that you can take with you into the field under the worst of conditions. Unfortunately this was a photocopied rip-off, and not the real thing or as described. Buyer beware.

Review of "Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook, 2nd Edition""

This version is the official military issue handbook, second edition, and is printed by the U.S. Government printing office with bar code affixed. The covers are heavily laminated and it's 750 pages are held together by three inadequate clip rings. As with the original version, I replaced the clip rings with nylon 550 parachute cord. It's format (5.5" by 8.5")is larger than it's predecessor (4.5" by 7.0") and is printed on a slightly less weather proof paper than the first edition. This larger format is a bit more awkward to carry in a tactical environment, but easily fits into a gallon ziploc bag . Although Amazon's price is identical to the GPO's, I prefer Amazon's hassle free ordering. This handbook is the Special Operations Forces Medical Bible. Its 130 subject matter expert contributors cover all facets of field, survival and emergency medicine. I highly recommend this handbook to those seeking a comprehensive, but easily understood, medical manual. It covers every topic from dentistry to veterinarian medicine. It is the must have medical reference if no doctor or medical providers are available.
Incidentally, the GPO offers this manual on CD-ROM for $6.25.

Comprehensive Medical Guide - Recommended

This "Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook" is the Second Edition, published in November 2008. My copy has a laminated cover and is held together with three rings, which is useful for keeping the book open to needed section.

While this is very comprehensive book is written for an audience with formal medical training, there are many sections that are useful and understandable for the layman. Chapter 8 is particularity interesting to me since it covers surgical and wound care procedures that are not covered well in other survival books we own.

This is going into my family emergency kit and truly hope that it never comes out of the vacuum sealed bag we are storing it in. Since the type is sort of small for my aging eyes, we have also packed a magnifier with the book.

About the Author
Jim Hassett is the founder of LegalBizDev, which helps law firms increase client satisfaction and profitability by improving project management and business development. Before he started working with lawyers, Jim had 20 years of experience as a sales trainer and consultant to companies from American Express to Zurich Financial Services. He is the author of 13 books, including The Legal Business Development Quick Reference Guide, The Legal Project Management Quick Reference Guide, Client Value and Law Firm Profitability and Legal Project Management, Pricing and Alternative Fee Arrangements. He has also published more than 80 articles in the New York Times Magazine, Of Counsel, Legal Management, Strategies: The Journal of Legal Marketing and other publications. Jim is a frequent speaker at law firms and at bar associations (including the New York City Bar, the New York State Bar, and the Massachusetts Bar), Harvard Law School, the Association of Corporate Counsel, the Defense Research Institute, the Ark Group, and at Legal Marketing Association meetings in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Savannah, and Vancouver. He has conducted webinars through West LegalEdcenter, the National Law Journal, The International Lawyers Network, TAG Academy, and the Legal Marketing Association. This book is an impressive display of scholarship. It is well-organised and very readable. Any teacher who is interested in improving his/her understanding of how second language learners learn (or do not learn) to read should read this book. Any teacher who is interested in helping students improve their reading skills should get this book. Very well done.

A must

This book is comprehensive and it is a must read for anyone who wants to find out what's going on in current research and practice in comprehension issues as it relates in first and second language. The text defines the literacy concept, discusses the research on this area, and also discusses the implications that this research has on comprehension instruction. I have been very satisfied with this book. I highly recommend it.

Very Thorough & Comprehensive Collection of L2 Reading Research

If you want to have a glance at what's going on in the field of L2 reading research, I strongly recommend this book. The author is, as I heard through my PhD adviser, quite well-known and recognized for his achievement in L2 reading & writing areas. And I think I could feel that what I heard was true when I read the first two chapters. At the end of every chapter, he gives some kind of pedagogic implications for teaching practitioners to get some tips that can be applied in the pertinent field. This is my favorite!

This can take you to the next level

I was a bit skeptical of this book at the beginning, because it seemed to share the word repurposing used by "new age" self-styled gurus who don't know what they are talking about. But really, there isn't a better way to express the principles and ideas than in using the words as Dr. Moss uses them.

As I continued to read, I found myself drawn ever deeper into an appreciation for Dr. Moss. What he's talking about in the book isn't some "new age" mumbo jumbo. Instead, it's about both the philosophy and a particular methodology of being fully present in what you are doing at the moment. This may sound elemental and seem like one of those "I already nailed that one" things, but it's not.

Being fully present is not something people tend to do. Our very culture works against it, as do the demands of life in general. We are easily pulled in multiple directions at once. Often, we try to live in the past, present, and future simultaneously.

For example, consider a fairly typical situation. A man is having a conversation with his wife. She's telling him about her day while comparing this or that event to something that happened a few months back. He's giving her advice while thinking about the ball game scheduled for later that evening. They are having a collective monologue.

Maybe that example doesn't fit you. But if you will review in your mind conversations you've had earlier in the day you will probably see a similar pattern. Instead of focusing on the now, each person is bringing something else to the table. They aren't truly engaging each other.

And that's just conversations. The same issue arises in other ways. For example, why do you experience stress if you are behind on a project? Because instead of being in the now and dealing with the project work, your mind is dealing with the future consequences of a late project. We also dredge up the past in ways that hamper our ability to deal with the present.

This book shows you a methodology for dealing with that issue. The context is that of healing, as the title suggests. So many of the examples are about dealing with sickness. But it is clear to me that the same methodology can be used for inside-out maintenance, inside-out growth, and inside-out whatever else you want. In fact, if you watch an elite athlete performing in his/her sport, you are very likely watching someone who is using these "in the now" principles.

I'll give you an example. Dr. Moss is a climber. That's something we have in common (I started climbing in the previous century). The ability to be in the moment is, I feel, a make or break for a climber. And the more of the now you occupy, the less you are limited as a climber.

Fear of heights? By focusing on the now, you aren't thinking about falling in the future. You just climb, with your attention on what you are doing now. And that's true of other challenges in climbing.

In fact, I was climbing the day before I finished reading this book. My climbing partner asked me about a bouldering route that he had been unable to solve, despite many tries. After watching him fail to ascend, I remarked that he needed to be fully in the now at each point. I then solved the route on my first ascent. The problem, I said, was he wasn't putting his center of gravity where it needed to be at the moment and this was pulling him off the face. Do not look ahead or behind, but be fully in the now. He then tried the route, and succeeded.

This kind of change in ability is one of the kinds of payoff brought about by being fully present. Think of the potential for your career, health, personal relationships, and other areas that are important to you.

This book consists of 13 chapters, an appendix, and endnotes in 252 pages.

A Must Read

This is Richard's most clear, concise work to date. (I have read all his books) He shares insights and powerful tools that are accessible to everyone interested in spiritual/personal growth. He covers many difficult topics including, serious illness, death and the "dark feelings" we have all felt. He gently and compassionately invites the reader to expand from the heart. From here he guides them on a path that allows one to move lovingly through these times. He does NOT use strategies but instead shares how to befriend the mystery of the unknowable Present Moment. This is a classic work written from the focused and spacious place he encourages the reader to enjoy.

If you read only one book this year, this is should be the one. Reading Dr. Moss' book has had a significant impact on the way I am experiencing severe unremtting chronic pain from an as yet unknown source that has been occurring over many months. My favorite chapter in the book is chapter 8 "Embracing Your Dark Feelings."

This book is better than all the other selfteach manuals presently on the market.It is not hypermath or over-simplistic.It saved me over $2000 in trying to learn electronics from a correspondence school.If you want to travel on a journey through electronics, this book is your first step!

excellent introduction to electricity!

Although basic as the title suggests, it is an excellent text with lots of problems and explanations for those requiring a technician's understanding of practical electricity using ELECTRON FLOW. One can breadboard a lot of these circuits and test circuit analysis concepts. Don't expect an electrical engineering circuit analysis book; for that purpose, get Mr. Van Valkenburgh's Engineering Circuits, or Bobrow's excellent Elementary Circuit Analysis and Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering.

This book is definitely the most informative basic electricity book that I have found, and it is also the easiest to understand and follow. It starts at the very basics of electricity and then introduces new concepts in a logical, easy to follow manner. The author does an excellent job of fully explaing new concepts before expanding and building further upon them.
