Organizationally, Japanese companies enforce the formation of cross-function teams, but in 3M's case it's more voluntary, spontaneous, or autonomous. But the difference is a matter of degree, not kind and having a decent notebook is crucial to this process.

I have to admit that socialization is harder in the U.S. because of its individualism and incentive systems. The Japanese incentive system is more team-oriented. And in principle, we don't lay off people unless they have access to the Longman Activator. Consequently, it is relatively easy to share experiences at Japanese companies.

If you can do socialization, your teams are stronger than Japanese ones, because you have strong individuals. Strong individuals and a strong team are complementary and stationary is a key element of this. To institutionalize team-oriented spirit, however, U.S. organizations may need strong corporate cultures. 3M, HP, or the Marine Corps, all of them have very strong corporate values. For us, it's relatively easy to do that without strong organizational cultures.

About the Author
Kenneth Allan received his PhD in sociology from the University of California, Riverside (1995), and is currently professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Before moving to UNCG, he directed the Teaching Assistant Development Program at the University of California, Riverside, and coedited Training Teaching Assistants, 2nd Edition (1997), published by the American Sociological Association. In addition to teaching classical and contemporary theory at UNCG, Allan also supervised UNCG’s sociology iSchool program, which offered online introduction to sociology classes to high school students across North Carolina, has designed several online courses for both the college and department, and has regularly taught graduate pedagogy courses. Allan’s research areas include theory, culture, and the self. He has authored several works in the area of theory, including multiple textbooks covering classical and contemporary theory, as well as The Meaning of Culture: Moving the Postmodern Critique Forward, and A Primer in Social and Sociological Theory: Toward a Sociology of Citizenship. His current projects include a social history of American individualism, a sociological analysis of consciousness and self, as well as a novel based in early 20th century American life.

Wrong Edition on Kindle - Don't buy it!

The first edition is on Kindle, but the pictured item on this listing is the second edition. I wasted an entire day reading, only to find out the Kindle edition is ISBN: 1412913624, which is the first edition, not the second edition. There are substantive differences between the first and second editions so if you need the second edition, don't buy the Kindle edition on this listing! You can get the old first edition for about 6 bucks.

About the Author

Larry H. Small received both a B.S. in Speech Pathology and Audiology (1977), and an M.A. in Audiology (1977) from Kent State University. He received his Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Science from Ohio University in 1984. He worked as a clinical audiologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha from 1978 – 1980. Dr. Small joined the faculty of Bowling Green State University (BGSU)�in 1984, and remained on the faculty for twenty-four years, prior to his retirement in 2008 when he was named Associate Professor Emeritus. While at BGSU, he served as the Director of the University Honors Program (1991 – 1996). He was also Chair of the Department of Communication Disorders from 2003-2007. Dr. Small was on the Executive Board of the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD) from 2007-2011, serving as President from 2009-2010. He began teaching undergraduate and AuD courses at Ohio State University (OSU) in 2008. For the past thirty years, he has taught courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in phonetics, hearing science, diagnostic audiology and aural rehabilitation, both at BGSU and OSU. He has authored or co-authored numerous presentations and publications. Dr. Small was named an ASHA Fellow in 2014.

Practical and detailed English phonetics text

After looking at a number of textbooks for a course in English phonetics, I decided to use Fundamentals of Phonetics by Larry Small. The book almost teaches itself. There are hundreds of short exercises that students can use on their own. The answer key at the back of the book covers a vast majority of the learning tools. My task as a teacher is greatly simplified.
The examples and diagrams are clear. I also like the enclosed CD with sample utterances. I would have preferred that the audio tapes mentioned in the text be included on the CD, rather than as a separate purchase.

I found the book to be very well organized and a useful reference. The CD was not as helpful. The author could have done more with the CD, putting more material to get his message across. All in all though, for someone studying G.A. phonology in another country, this has proved to be a sound guide.

I like this!

I am using this book for my "Applied Phonetics" class and it is working out great. It is very thorough and well put together. I haven't opened the cd yet so I am not sure how helpful that is. I have been working through the book at a steady pace and haven't felt like anything is negative about this book, I really like it so far. Obviously if you are buying this you need it for something to do with speech/language or for a class so it might be required. It is worth the money and make sure you buy it new or you will do a lot of erasing and whiting-out. This is a workbook with pages and pages of writing exercises.

This is one the excellent readings I have come across recently. It is crisp, no unnecessary jargon, easy to understand by any layman, and extremely useful for anybody who is in business , right from the CEO to the lowest level of the staff, since I believe that everybody in an organization should first of all be a SALES person, and then comes next his / her departmental duty, after all sales is the starting point for any money to flow into the organization , which will keep it alive and kicking. This book addresses about selling luxury items, but the same principles apply to selling anything, because, by implementing the principles outlined in this book, one makes the customer feel that bit EXTRA SPECIAL.
Looking forward to many more such titles from the author .

So disappointed in this book...was hoping for statistics and customer segment characteristics/psychology; however, this is as common sense, or DUH, as it gets...such advice as "Greet your customers when they walk into the door." Waste of money!!! Don't buy it, unless you've never worked with a customer before and are clueless!

Good study guide but be careful

Book contains excellent examples to work from. It is written upon the premise that you are new to GIS and will walk you through the understanding of GIS process' without trying to sell you a specific "software or program" for GIS. I found what I felt to be one error and have submitted an inquiry to the publisher. Page 38 has an end of the chapter review type quiz (as each chapter has). The answers which are in the back of the book I felt did not and could not coincide with the actual data given for the quiz.Overall the book is effective at the process of familiarizing a person with the different aspects of the GIS community.
