A Landmark Book on Addiction

As the father of a recovering heroin addict, I will tell anyone who asks me that David Sheff's Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction is probably the best book I've ever read. As a matter of fact, Beautiful Boy helped me come to grips with my own son's addiction and prompted me to work on my own recovery. As a result, I was able to get my own life back. Even better, as I write this review my 23-year-old son is eight months clean and sober--the longest stretch of clean time he's had since he was 16.

That being said, it should come as no surprise that Clean: Overcoming Addiction and Ending America's Greatest Tragedy is probably the most anticipated book ever for me. I pre-ordered it from Amazon as soon as I heard about it and have been eagerly awaiting its publication. Luckily, I was able to get an advance copy through Amazon's Vine program.

David Sheff's latest offering is to be commended for many reasons. First and foremost, though, is its explanation of how addiction works and its attempt to break the stigma frequently associated with this ancient disease. "Most drug use isn't about drugs; it's about life," Sheff writes in the Preface. "Our prevention and treatment efforts have failed mostly because they've focused on dealing with the drugs themselves, but drug abuse is almost always the result of kids starting to use early, genetics, and other problems--stress, trauma, mental illness, or some combination of these factors. The new paradigm is rooted in recognizing that drugs are a symptom, not a cause, and whatever problems underlie them must be (and can be) addressed. Until they are, our prevention and treatment systems will continue to fail most people."

Sheff outlines the six precepts that underpin Clean in the Preface. They are:

1. Most drug use isn't about drugs; it's about life.
2. Addiction is a disease.
3. This disease is preventable.
4. This disease is treatable.
5. As with any other illness, the prevention strategies and treatments most likely to work aren't based on tradition, wishful thinking, or faith, but science.
6. Drug abusers and addicts can do more than get off drugs; they can achieve mental health.

Those precepts are the road map for the book, and Sheff does a fabulous job of backing them all up using scientific evidence, case studies, and his own expertise and experience.

Regarding the stigma associated with addiction, Sheff states: "This stigma associated with drug use--the belief that bad kids use, good kids don't, and those with full-blown addiction are weak, dissolute, and pathetic--has contributed to the escalation of use and has hampered treatment more than any single other factor." As the father of a recovering addict, I know all too well how that stigma affects addicts--and families of addicts--in a negative way. Kudos to Sheff for attacking it head-on.

Another misconception Sheff takes on has to do with relapse: "The main problems with America's addiction-treatment system stem from its roots in the archaic notion that addiction is a choice, not a disease. One common symptom of the disease of addiction is relapse. Kicking an addict out of treatment for relapsing is like kicking a cancer patient out of treatment when a tumor metastasizes." Again, Sheff is telling it like it is and striving to destroy the old myths associated with addiction.

Every page of this book has interesting and valuable information on it. Some paragraphs are so full of information that I found myself re-reading them so I could absorb everything Sheff had to say. I will probably re-read the entire book several times. It's that good and that informative.

This is not only a book about addiction; it's a book about hope. It lets people know that addiction can be prevented. And even if one does succumb to addiction, that there are ways to treat the disease and for people to get clean and stay clean. Sheff ends the main part of the book with his own take on the twelve steps, entitled "The Clean Paradigm in Twelve Steps." (Example: "12. End the war on drugs and treat addiction for what it is--not a criminal problem, but a health crisis.") He also provides a very informative Appendix--"Just Say Know"--where he describes "the most prevalent drugs and their effects, starting with the most ubiquitous drug of all." (That would be alcohol.)

If you have been affected by addiction, you must read this book. If you have kids entering their formative years, you must read this book. If there is a history of addiction in your family, you must read this book. Even if you don't fit any of those categories, I'd still recommend you read Clean to get a remarkable insight into one of the biggest issues facing our country today.

What I appreciate most about this book is that it is the first I have read that does not claim to hold the only way to sobriety, or the only truth about addiction. I appreciate the nod to parents who lose their minds when a child is dying, that we not compound the indignity by taking fire at the parents as "co dependents".

But we have a long way to go. I wish I could put this book in the hands of our local judges, probation officers, jailers and police, and insist that they read it. They continue to mete out punative sentences, or insist upon ineffective treatment, too much or too little, that can especially ruin young lives.

Two of my children have suffered severe addiction lasting over 15 years. I have seen them through Hazeldon (four times), Caron Foundation, Michael's House, Bishop Gooden (3 times)and at least five other top-name facilities... in and out of ICU, chasing paramedics to hospitals after overdoses, into long term in-patient and out-patient treatment facilities for years. I hate to say this... by far the best rehab has been jail. That's not to say anything positive about jail except that it did essentially the same thing as all the rehabs... it bought them time away from the environment and allowed them time to detox (horribly, without any medical attention... but, it is what it is.) In terms of effectiveness, though, they always relapsed again eventually. It is clear to me that there is no punishment strong enough to "cure" addiction.

One of my kid's came through it--the one everyone thought wouldn't live another day and he has been five years sober. It just happened when it was ready to happen. My other son is still struggling addiction with everything he's got, but holds a great job, smiles, is kind, loving and always thoughtful. He has chosen Methadone treatment, and because of that, there is no hospital, rehab or other treatment facility that will accept him. If he wants to finally get totally clean, he will have to do it by himself... cold turkey. My thought at this point is that we are buying him time, and praying for the miracle. Harm reduction is the thing I humbly appreciate. I never thought I would wind up praising the run down, miserable looking Needle Exchange (I used to find these clean needles in his room and toss them out, until the day he explained that all that would do is cause him to take worse chances with his using)... because of these folks, my son doesn't have HIV on top of heroin addiction. I have learned to be grateful where I never thought I would.

David Sheff has been through all of this, and is still fighting the good fight. His son, Nic, must be one fine son--and I have read both of his great books. "Clean" can't make big proclamations about what treatment to seek or where because at this time the science is still too new, the statistics aren't all in. I am SO GRATEFUL he acknowledges that white-knuckling it through AA is not the way for everyone. My son has gone to hundreds of AA meetings, and I honor that he hung in there, continuing to try when it was so obviously NOT a fit. Maybe the thing David contributes the most in this book is humility... and trust in the goodness of those who are struggling with addiction.

I never saw my sons having any fun with this. I have held my younger son's head while he threw up, went through withdrawals, dozens of times. I've watched him sit suicidally alone in his room, while trying to detox before going to jail. I haven't seen the partying everyone imagines. And by far the worst (for me) is the abandonment I have felt, for them and for myself, when things go so terribly wrong.

Thank you, David, for your great book. And I expect that you will write another ( or Nic will!) as newer and more potent resources become known.

Such an important book

David Sheff not only pulls the curtain back, he blows it off the rod so we all can get a real look at addiction and what is NOT working. He demonstrates how we are 40 years behind on addiction therapy. If you have children, YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK. Addiction can happen anywhere to anyone and it does.

Mr. Sheff was the author of Beautiful Boy - his son's own journey into and through the landscape of drug addiction.

One of the most important take-aways I got from this book was the fact that 9 our of 10 addicts started before 18. Can you even believe that? So, if you could somehow devise a way to keep your kids from trying before they turn 18, 90% of your battle would be won. Anyway - I thought that was some real food for thought.

Another take-away - this one too heartbreaking - just when an addict falls down and off his program - that is when the system fails him and throws him out of the program, the halfway house. JUST when this support and help is needed so much.

A big chapter is devoted to AA. Totally non-judgmental. Just the facts, descriptions. Interesting.

A thorough review of therapies, which ones have the best results and why. Following a daily schedule, chock full of habits - can really help. This seems so simple and yet is so profound.

And Dear G*D - - - the COST of some of these programs - and insurance doesn't help - HOW CAN regular people help their family get this kind of help?!? WHY can't we have more effective treatment programs at better costs, why isn't insurance helping with this?? Lots of food for thought there.

Okay - what I thought could be done a little better:

1. A one page - WHAT DO I DO NOW - for the parent/loved one/etc. when my son/daughter/person - is in trouble - I don't have time or attention to read the 350 pages - I need a one page cheat sheet.

2. A simple glossary in the back of the book. CBT - means what again? You could use a glossary in the back to look it up - OH YEAH - Cog. Behavior Therapy...

Those were my two little shortcomings comments.

Great book - so much to think about - to discuss - long overdue.

For many years, spiritual seekers have turned East in search of the wisdom of Buddhism, Hinduism and other Eastern religious traditions. Smolley and Kinney, editors of Gnosis magazine, contend that the wisdom so eagerly sought from these Eastern traditions has been readily available in Western esoteric traditions. In their introduction, the authors note that "esoteric traditions are concerned with transcendence.... [E]sotericists say it may be possible not only to reach God in the next life, but to experience him in this one." These traditions emphasize self-awakening to inner wisdom. According to the authors, esoteric spirituality teaches that such an awakening brings great clarity and insight into the meanings of dreams, myths and symbols. The opening chapter explores how Jung's idea of the collective unconscious and his discussions of alchemy spurred new interest in Western esotericism. In subsequent chapters, Smolley and Kinney offer engaging and lively histories of esoteric movements, ranging from Kabbalism, magic, Wicca and neopaganism to shamanism, alchemy, hermeticism and Sufism. Each chapter provides a historical overview, an introduction to the major beliefs and practices of the movement and comments on the reasons spiritual seekers might find that particular esoteric tradition attractive, closing with an annotated bibliography. Smolley and Kinney's handbook provides a useful introduction to the many varieties of Western esotericism.

During the 1960s, many Americans began seeking answers to their most pressing spiritual needs in various Asian religions, and this eastward focus has continued. Smoley and Kinney, editors of Gnosis magazine (a journal of mystical spirituality), argue persuasively that many of the faiths identified with the West offer mystical insights as rich as anything found in the East. The subtitle of this book is its best description. The topics covered include Jung's theories of the unconscious, Gurdjieffianism, gnosticism, the Jewish Kaballah, witchcraft and neopaganism, nativistic Shamanism, and the beliefs of Masons and Templars. This book does a particularly good job on "fringe" occult areas such as esoteric Christianity, astral light magic, and New Age theology. The authors take special care not to advocate one belief system over another and offer a highly readable account of Western spirituality and mysticism. A Balanced View of the Western Esoteric Tradition

Richard Smoley, former editor of the (lamentably) defunct magazine "Gnosis," has written an excellent introduction to the Western Mystery Tradition in all of its major forms: Hermeticism, Wicca, esoteric Christianity, Sufism, and "the Fourth Way," among others. As always, Smoley is balanced, objective, fair, and - above all - sane. There is nothing of the fanatic or obscurantist about Smoley, and he blends a wide knowledge of the field with bits of humor and insights gained from personal experience.

Smoley is an excellent writer - intelligent and engaging, without being pedantic or superficial. I have only one caveat about this book: those already familiar with these topics - including former readers of "Gnosis" - might find that the book covers familiar territory and offers little that is new. Still, even these readers might find it useful as a reference. But for those new to these topics, you couldn't do better than start with this book; Smoley is a trusted guide in a field too often inhabited by quacks, cultists, and uncritical enthusiasts.

Intelligent, entertaining, extremely learned yet readable...

In the flood of psycho-spiritual babble books, this one is a quiet winner. Like the magazine Gnosis which the authors edited and published for many years, this book is intelligent and well-balanced and shines a much-needed light on musty areas of Western spirituality. I found it very useful, especially the annotated bibiography for each subject - sufism, Gurdjieff, alchemy, shamanism, etc. And where else would you find out the real reason why Hitler didn't invade England...? Highly recommended!

THE guide to who's who & what's what in western esoterica

The authors have accomplished a rare feat by being simultaneously sympathetic yet impartial in describing such a broad range of spiritual teachings. They provide succinct but nuanced descriptions of these teachings, along with each's history and relationships to other teachings. Also included is much sage advice for those who may wish to pursue these paths, and annotated references for additional reading. This has clearly been a labor of love on Smoley & Kinney's part. It is well worth reading for anyone with the slightest bit of interest in spiritual matters, whatever their religious preference.

Cross (Heavier than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain) turns his thoughtful eye toward another Seattle music icon, Jimi Hendrix (1942–1970). With a storyteller's eye, he captures Hendrix's difficult, poverty-stricken childhood with alcoholic and largely absent parents, rendering it as tragic yet not without its happy, tender moments. After a stint as an army paratrooper, Hendrix knocked around playing guitar in blues clubs in the 1960s, winding up in New York and eventually London, where he established himself as a guitar god, even earning the adulation of the Beatles, before exploding onto the U.S. scene with a 1967 appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival. While replete with tales of rock star excess, Cross's narrative, based on more than 300 interviews, describes Hendrix as thoughtful and craving some semblance of order to his life, even as it became steeped in drug use. Of Hendrix's death at age 27, viewed by many as a possible suicide, Cross makes the best case yet for it being accidental, portraying Hendrix as exhausted, unable to sleep and likely taking nine sleeping pills without much thought. Although there is no shortage of bios--or posthumously released recordings--of Hendrix, Cross distinguishes this effort with information gleaned from interviews with primary sources, including Hendrix's surviving family members. Cross is able to provide a fresher and more detailed portrait than appeared in Al Hendrix's (Jimi's deceased father) autobiography, including updates on the intra-family squabbles caused by Al's will. A fuller picture of Hendrix's formative years and the odd dynamic that infused the relationship of Al and Jimi's mother, Lucille, consequently emerges. Theirs was a troubled relationship, rife with adultery and the suspicion, frequently voiced by Al, that not all of the couple's children were biologically his. In addition to the family dirt, Cross covers all the usual Hendrix bases and then some. Was Jimi bisexual? Quite possibly. Intelligently and Respectfully done..

When I realized the author wasn't even around during the time Jimi was playing, I almost wrote the book off on that basis. That would have been a huge mistake.

My very special friend, Glenn, obtained two tickets to see Jimi at Madison Square Garden, and invited me along. The music was incredible. I still recall All Along the Watchtower, and much of what was on Electric Ladyland. The stage was in the center of the house and it slowly turned. To make things even wierder, tons of picture flashes continued to go off. I have often thought Jimi must have disliked having that stage turn and nothing being done about all the camera flashes, as though he was in the circus, and when the book got to that show, it confirmed my assumption.

On a second occasion, with my same friend, we went to see what was billed as the "Festival for Peace" at Madison Square Garden, but fortunately this time, the stage was at the end of the floor and stationary. Jimi played just a few songs, and I was utterly blown away with a smile ear to ear. Wish you were all there, as attempting to explain that experience is impossible to do with words. After just a few songs, Jimi let his guitar fall to the floor and walked off stage. I never understood what the problem was, since he sounded amazing. The book touches on that show as well and provides insight.

As I began reading this book, I was a bit turned off by all the detail behind Jimi's family, and very young years, but this detail proved essential in having a proper context to understand much that followed, choices Jimi made, and revealed Jimi the person, not the star.

This book is an excellent place to start, or finish, for that matter, for any one looking to read about Jimi. So many people that knew Jimi particularly well, have been extremely generous to share such intimate details. This book pulls you in, bringing the past into the present leaving you feeling as though you were there, during each step of the journey.

The details in this book are just incredible. The time Jimi spent in England, personal relationships, friends, fans, fellow muscisians sharing stories. Wow!

Jimi left us too early, but with a body of work that stands among the best ever recorded. To read this book is also to understand Jimi the person, full of sound, fury, and a huge heart with a tender soul.

Interesting read, slow start.

It was a very interesting read, but i felt it focused too much time on his family history before getting into his career. I liked how talked about some some of his interests outside of music. I also enjoyed learning how and why he learned some of his unique talents, his unique sound, and unique look.

'Mirrors' lacks clear reflection

Having recently been given a compilation of obscure Hendrix by a friend and not being a huge Hendrix fan I wanted some background. Cross' 'Room Full of Mirrors' provides a lot of detail about Jimi's life without explaining much. As a chronology I'll assume it is accurate. There just isn't any 'heart and soul' to the read. Jimi's early years are described with a dry, factual detachment. But how did he make the leap from a dreamer to a participant? How did this high school drop out become the greatest electric guitar player of all time? You'll have to 'just ask the axis', because it's not here.

Oliver Sacks calls Temple Grandin's first book--and the first picture of autism from the inside--"quite extraordinary, unprecedented and, in a way, unthinkable." Sacks told part of her story in his An Anthropologist on Mars, and in Thinking in Pictures Grandin returns to tell her life history with great depth, insight, and feeling. Grandin told Sacks, "I don't want my thoughts to die with me. I want to have done something ... I want to know that my life has meaning ... I'm talking about things at the very core of my existence." In her second autobiographical volume (after Emergence: Labelled Autistic), Grandin, a high-functioning autistic profiled by Oliver Sacks in his recent book, An Anthropologist on Mars, offers a series of original, linked essays on her life and work. An assistant professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University, her heightened ability to visualize allows her to make sense of the world by constructing concrete visual metaphors; for her, every concept must be tied into her nonverbal "video library" of particular people, places and associations. By thus enabling Grandin to put herself in the place of cows and other animals, her visual imagination has helped her to design humane livestock-processing equipment (these designs have been so effective that they now handle one-third of the nation's cattle and hogs). Throughout these essays, Grandin blends personal anecdotes with plainspoken accounts of scientific approaches to autism and methods of treatment, like drug therapy and a "squeeze machine" she invented to modify sensory stimulation. Although her prose is uneven, her insights and achievements are astonishing. Ultimately, Grandin finds within science and autism the basis for belief in God, given that her designs, which spring from her powers of visualization, reduce suffering and promote calm in both the animals and herself. In her autobiography, Emergence: Labeled Autistic (LJ 5/15/86), Grandin (animal studies, Colorado State Univ.) related how, as a high-functioning autistic adult, she overcame her disability to become a designer of livestock-handling equipment. Recently profiled in Oliver Sacks's An Anthropologist on Mars (LJ 2/15/95), Grandin also lectures on autism at meetings and conferences. Using insights from scientific studies, autobiographies by autistic adults, and her own experience, she lucidly explains how people with autism differently perceive and process visual and sensory information and experience and express emotions, as well as develop social skills. She reviews diagnosis and treatment of autism, and discusses its association with talent and genius. Throughout the book we learn of Grandin's own strategies for coping with her autism and how autism has given her an advantage in understanding the behavior of other animals. fascinating

This was a fascinating read. I especially liked the first half when she talked about her childhood, her memories and how she came to learn things. It’s very helpful in understanding the different way autistic people think. Her style of writing was intriguing and I think really showed her logical way of seeing things.

For the second half I had to continually keep reminding myself that she is talking about her life and her own interests. She devotes two entire chapters to animals, their thoughts and emotions and connecting with them, and while it was very interesting, I obviously do not have the passion for that particular topic that she does. Some of those chapters I felt like I had to plod through a bit.

Overall I got out of this book what I thought I would—a better understanding of differences in thought pattern. I’m glad I read it.

I think in pictures, too.

This is a very interesting book, an eye opener for me. As I was reading it, I reflected back on my own life, and realized that I am very much like Temple. I am an older woman as well. In my time, instead of being labeled as autistic, I was labeled gifted. In first grade though I did not know how to talk and relate with others and my parents were asked to move me to a school for mute children. At home I talked though and my mother tried to help me learn to relate to others. It took a while, as I related far more to plants and animals than people and still do. Also, I am always the first to notice things which can be good if it's danger.
On a test in high school that measured ability to visualize for spacial relations, I scored 99.99% for all women and above 98% of all men. Verbal processing was always a chore, however, and social cues were and continue to be learned by hard experience and in some cases remain a mystery in many cases. A class that teaches social norms would be good for kids now since they are not obvious to us picture thinkers. Thank goodness Temple's mother and my own mother found ways to help us flourish. We all have special gifts and weaknesses. The key is to realize your strengths and find work in that direction, plus find ways to help your weaknesses. I would also recommend another of her books, "The Austistic Brain". At the end, it discussed strengths and what types of jobs might be good for each. This is similar to my high school career test.
I would definitely recommend this book. Temple's observations helped cattle be processed more humanely. I admit I was a bit squeamish about that part but hearing that she cared about them and found ways to make their time in processing better softened this topic.

I would recommend reading Temple Grandin's books and watching the movie about her life, if you want to know more about Autism; and she is also an interesting individual in my opinion. I myself have high functioning Autism too, so I can relate to her quite a bit; despite having different interests. For example, she's more scientifically oriented than I am. But, I like that she overcame all the obstacles that a lot of people with disabilities face; like people making fun of her, and saying that she can't live a normal life as a couple of examples when she grew up in a difficult time period for people like that. That's why I look up to her.

If you like African photo books with the background stories included, this is just fantastic. Many different parts of the continent are included, pictures are stunning. Most photos are of traditional dress, harder and harder to find in Africa as time goes on.
