The study concludes with an extensive examination of Miss Kilmansegg and Her Precious Leg, showing how Hood was here able to inflect a jeu d'esprit with a fine Juvenalian passion.

About the Author
Rodney Stenning Edgecombe is Associate Professor of English at the University of Cape Town. He took his MA at Rhodes University, where he won the Royal Society of St George Prize for English, and his PhD at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was awarded the Members' English Prize 1978/1979. He has published ten books and over two hundred and thirty articles on topics that range from Shakespeare to nineteenth-century ballet and opera. In 2001, UCT presented him with a Distinguished Teacher's Award.

About the Author
Yolande Korkie is the widow of Pierre and mother of Peter and Lize. Born in the USA, but grown on South African soil, she holds a master's degree in Psychology and a diploma in Pastoral Counseling. As Pierre's helpmate, she supported him in his endeavors as if they were her own; farming, mentoring, and Yemen. There she lived the language through teaching, relief work and equestrian activities. They are currently living in South Africa and Yolande lectures at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.

Their real love for the Yemeni people

What a read... Honest. Disturbing. Hopeful. Real. This one grabbed me by the heart and still hasn't let go. Yolande Korkie shares personal details that never reached the news. Her touching story about how she and her husband Pierre found comfort in being together in Al Qaeda's hostile captivity, really opened my eyes. Their real love for the Yemeni people, the Yemeni people's shame because of the treatment they got, the devotion and true friendship between Christians and Muslims, all so different than what one would expect. A heart-warming account of true love, honest faith, loyalty and the choice to forgive the people who stole their freedom and ultimately her husband's life. I highly recommend this one.

Yolande and Pierre Korkie were ordinary people who were placed in extraordinary circumstances when they were kidnapped by Al Queda in Yemen. The story of their kidnapping, time as hostages and their deep faith in God and love for each other is told by Yolande. A very moving and touching testimony. i highly recommend this book

Behdad shows how political, cultural, and legal texts have articulated American anxiety about immigration from the Federalist period to the present day. He reads texts both well-known—J. Hector St. John de Cr�vecoeur’s Letters from an American Farmer, Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America, and Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass—and lesser-known—such as the writings of nineteenth-century nativists and of public health officials at Ellis Island. In the process, he highlights what is obscured by narratives and texts celebrating the United States as an open-armed haven for everyone: the country’s violent beginnings, including its conquest of Native Americans, brutal exploitation of enslaved Africans, and colonialist annexation of French and Mexican territories; a recurring and fierce strand of nativism; the need for a docile labor force; and the harsh discipline meted out to immigrant “aliens” today, particularly along the Mexican border.
