Errand into the Wilderness, by Perry Miller

The title of this book by Perry Miller, who is world-famous as an interpreter of the American past, comes close to posing the question it has been Mr. Miller's lifelong purpose to answer: What was the underlying aim of the first colonists in coming to America? In what light did they see themselves? As men and women undertaking a mission that was its own cause and justification? Or did they consider themselves errand boys for a higher power which might, as is frequently the habit of authority, change its mind about the importance of their job before they had completed it?

These questions are by no means frivolous. They go to the roots of seventeenth-century thought and of the ever-widening and quickening flow of events since then. Disguised from twentieth-century readers first by the New Testament language and thought of the Puritans and later by the complacent transcendentalist belief in the oversoul, the related problems of purpose and reason-for-being have been central to the American experience from the very beginning. Mr. Miller makes this abundantly clear and real, and in doing so allows the reader to conclude that, whatever else America might have become, it could never have developed into a society that took itself for granted.

The title, Errand into the Wilderness, is taken from the title of a Massachusetts election sermon of 1670. Like so many jeremiads of its time, this sermon appeared to be addressed to the sinful and unregenerate whom God was about to destroy. But the original speaker's underlying concern was with the fateful ambiguity in the word errand. Whose errand?

This crucial uncertainty of the age is the starting point of Mr. Miller's engrossing account of what happened to the European mind when, in spite of itself, it began to become something other than European. For the second generation in America discovered that their heroic parents had, in fact, been sent on a fool's errand, the bitterest kind of all; that the dream of a model society to be built in purity by the elect in the new continent was now a dream that meant nothing more to Europe. The emigrants were on their own. Thus left alone with America, who were they? And what were they to do?

In this book, as in all his work, the author of The New England Mind: The Seventeenth Century; The New England Mind: From Colony to Province, and The Transcendentalists, emphasizes the need for understanding the human sources from which the American mainstream has risen. In this integrated series of brilliant and witty essays which he describes as "pieces," Perry Miller invites and stimulates in the reader a new conception of his own inheritance.

Review
Perry Miller has corrected the extreme revisionist historians who have overstressed the authoritarian and even totalitarian aspects of Puritan political doctrine. Miller corrects the balance by bringing out the inherent individualism of American Puritanism, its respect for private conscience, and even the revolutionary implications nurtured by Puritan doctrine....He has given us an analysis of the Puritan mind which is subtle and sophisticated, profound and humane, and revised in the light of the most recent scholarship. (Richard B. Morris New York Times Book Review)

Professor Miller has assembled materials which would otherwise not be easily accessible and which, taken together, present new perspectives on the dominant Christian origin of American political doctrine and civilization. Beginning with the Puritans and their preoccupation with orthodoxy and continuing with the Quakers, the Congregationalists, Calvinists, and Unitarians, he interprets each from the point of view of its place in social and political change....Dominant figures such as Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, and Emerson are brought to life with understanding. The chapter on the various theories and prophecies on the end of the world brings the record up to the present. The author's impressive knowledge of the subject and his persistent research are evident throughout. (Library Journal)

The Origins of American History Through the Examples of the Puritans
By Matt Tippens
Perry Miller's "Errand Into the Wilderness" is a collection of ten essays on American Puritanism. In these essays, Miller attempts to examine the origins of American history through the examples of the Puritans. His main thesis is one of Americanization. Miller's ten essays follow the theme of "errand into the wilderness" and he uses theological, social, and literary contributions to explain and exhibit this errand into the wilderness. Miller provides literary criticism for each piece to interpret them according to the uniqueness of the American experience.

The title of the book derives its name from Samuel Danforth's 1670 election sermon. The word "errand" is a "metaphor" that probes "some deeper configuration in the story than mere modification, by obvious and natural necessity, of an imported European culture in an adjustment to a frontier" (p. 1). Miller's first chapter discusses the second and third generation Puritans who began to question if they had fulfilled John Winthrop's prophecy of a "city upon a hill." Did they set up and provide a model society for Protestant Europe or did they create something new? Miller contends that the Puritans had unknowingly "redefined their errand" and had begun the process of Americanization and a new identity. This process of "redefining their errand" led to inner tensions and splintering among the Puritans. In "Thomas Hooker and the Democracy of Connecticut," Miller opposes the Vernon L. Parrington and James Truslow Adams views that Connecticut was more democratic than Massachusetts. Miller believes that the rivalry between Hooker and Cotton Mather was much more a factor in the separation. Miller explains the pattern of settlement among river towns of the Connecticut Valley worked out a social pattern, a wilderness pattern, that was vastly different from that of Boston or Salem. Miller believes the philosophical view in Connecticut was similar to Massachusetts.

In the essay entitled "Religion and Society in the Early Literature of Virginia," Miller tries to show that this colony had many similarities with New England. Even though historians have represented Virginia as a business proposition, the colonizing impulse was Protestant, similar to that of the Puritans. The Virginians justified their errand into the wilderness by appealing to the Protestant theology that it would be most acceptable to God. When the Company dissolved it went from a holy experiment to a commercial plantation. In the following essay, "The Puritan State and Puritan Society," Miller believes that Puritanism was not tolerant or democratic and that the government of New England was a dictatorship that was carried into the wilderness. The following chapter on Jonathan Edwards and the Great Awakening, presents the awakening as a social revolution or transformation that was brought into the American wilderness in search of a new concept of meaning. By 1740, Edwards was the turning point in the Puritan errand into the wilderness. Edwards, a child of the wilderness, was convinced that people should be brought into the experience, that it was not "private and privileged," but "social and communal" (p. 163). The people played a role in their own welfare. Miller analyzes the influence of John Locke on Edwards, saying that Edwards went beyond Locke, that the word was linked not only with the idea, but also with the emotions. The belief that an idea in the mind is not merely a concept, but an emotion, and Edwards preached terror and fear.

Miller continues on with Edwards by comparing him to Ralph Waldo Emerson in an attempt to show that the two of them are not as far apart as we would believe. Miller asserts that Puritan covenant theology, Edwards' sensationalism, and Emersonian transcendentalism have some similar features. Edwards went to nature to find the images or shadows of divine things, whereas Emerson went to nature and saw the mind in a mutual embrace with nature. Miller goes onto discuss the mid-nineteenth century fascination with nature in America. That nature was the last thing between Americans and civilization. If nature were civilized, it would mean the end of the errand into the wilderness.

In the final essay, Miller asks the questions, "Can an errand, even an errand into the wilderness, be run indefinitely?" "What will America do - what can America do - with an implacable prophecy that there is a point in time beyond which the very concept of the future becomes meaningless? What then happens to the errand?" (p. 217). Here, Miller extends his argument from Edwards to the atomic bomb. Miller calls Jonathan Edwards the greatest artist of the apocalypse and that the need for a Judgment had not been removed by scientific discovery. "It will come as a cry at midnight," Edwards said (p.233). Miller, however, concludes that the errand into the wilderness was not run for this. Even though Massachusetts ministers and magistrates thought that their people had not been faithful to the errand, Miller finds that their "errand into the wilderness" was, indeed, a success.

It's Miller Time!
By Thomas B. O'Neill
Perry Miller is a rare experience in American history writing. I think he's wrong about fifty percent of the time, but so help me, I'd rather read Miller wrong than just about any other historian right. He's that stimulating. Compared to him, the accepted field of other writers--with the exceptions of Howard Zinn and Richard Hofstadter--seem so many antiquarians and nostalgia freaks. They'd be very happy collecting and sorting rocks. With Miller it's always the Big Questions front and center: Who are we, and how did we get that way. - Tom O'Neill

About the Author
Rose Gordon is aUSA Todaybestselling author and writer of eight bestselling, unusually unusual historical romances that have been known to include scarred heroes, feisty heroines, marriage-producing scandals, far too much scheming, naughty literature and always a sweet happily-ever-after. When not escaping to another world via reading or writing a book, she spends her time chasing two young boys around the house, being hunted by wild animals, or sitting on the swing in the backyard where she has to use her arms as shields to deflect projectiles AKA: balls, water balloons, sticks, pinecones, and anything else one of them picks up to hurl at his brother who just happens to be hiding behind her.

Fun and Tender at the Same Time
By Ruth
This book was so much fun to read! The thing that stands out the most is the author's sense of humor. Even in the worst of circumstances for the characters, the author was able to word things in such a way that had me laughing. Like when Liberty's being forced to marry Paul, and before the wedding, her sister and mother instruct her on her wedding night but are too afraid to name the male privates but just tell Liberty that Paul will 'touch her with it'. In light of the fact that Liberty is horrified enough to be marrying Paul, her reaction to her mother and sister's well meaning spiel was just too funny.

The humor was what kept me up most of the night reading the book, but what compelled me to buy this book was the plot. Paul and Liberty meet, and Liberty thinks Paul is a huge bore so she doesn't like him. From there, they become enemies, and Liberty is determined to get her revenge on Paul so she sneaks into his room while he's bathing and takes all of his clothes. (The fact that she can't keep her eyes off his private area while she's trying to get him to promise to cut all ties with her father was funny too.) Her parents and the butler catch her, and the butler ends up creating a scandal about the whole thing, saying she was trying to seduce Paul. The next thing Paul and Liberty know, they're being forced to marry. I love the arch enemies forced into married plot. I also love the virgin hero characteristic. I should add here that the fact that he is a virgin becomes very important in the book later on, but I won't spoil it.

So Liberty who values propriety above all else marries Paul who wants to see the real Liberty. The evolving of their relationship from hate to love was done gently and tenderly. For example, he gave her a journal to start recording whenever she smiled and told her that she becomes beautiful whenever she smiles. Liberty had a hard time believing it due to her plain appearance, but that was one of the most touching scenes I've read in a long time. The book was actually full of such tender moments, and I couldn't help but love both of these characters.

Mix humor with tenderness and you end up with a definite keeper for your bookshelf. Definitely worth 5+ stars! I highly recommend this book.

Better than I expected - Liberty redeems herself
By LyinLyon
This is the second book in Rose Gordon's "Scandalous Sisters Series." If you've read the first book in the series, Intentions of the Earl, then you'll recall Liberty as the incredibly annoying and high-handed youngest Banks sister, who denounces everyone around her for any transgression against propriety. I wasn't expecting to like "Liberty for Paul" given that Liberty appears in book 1 and the beginning of this book as a vendictive, hypocritical, stubborn, insensitive, self-absorbed and overly-critical shrew. Yep, she's that unlikeable. However, I think the author does an admirable job of eventually explaining why Liberty acts this way (a combination of immaturity and deep insecurities) and redeeming her into a likeable character. While she maintains the tongue of a shrew through much of the book, we come to find that Liberty is actually
a very generous person and naturally inclined towards charitible works. She's hardworking, loyal, and once she realizes that she's acted wrongly she feels her transgressions deeply and tries earnestly to rectify them. So she ends up being a character whose flaws you can forgive as she learns to open her heart.
But the real draw in this story is Paul, which was unexpected because he's pretty boring and a bit mousey for me in "Intentions of the Earl". However, he turns out to be a very likeable, male romance lead - even if he isn't the typical, brooding, powerful, philandering, alpha male. In fact, he's really not like any other main male character that I've encountered in a Regency romance. He's intelligent, sincere, thoughtful, sensitive, virginal, and generally willing to see the best in people and make the best of poor situations. He is the catalyst for Liberty slowly dropping her defenses and revealing her past hurts because he's genuinely interested in understanding what makes her tick and seeing to her happiness. What makes the storyline very human and enjoyable is that Paul somehow decides that the way to get Liberty to be herself and regain her spunk is to incite her to arguments and flare her temper. Eventually, he realizes that encouraging her happiness and smiles is a better avenue, but not before some humorous dinner conversations take place.
The author does a really good job of taking 2 main characters who are far from the romance ideal and molding their story so that you look forward to their eventual happy ending. I actually found the atypical situation and personalities of Liberty and Paul was refreshing and lended to an enjoyable story that falls outside the overused mold of titled gentleman rogue pursues spunky, beautiful heroine.
I can't say that this author is one of my top favorites, but this story (and the "Scandalous Sisters Series" in general) is enjoyable, well-written, and moves along. This author lacks the charm of Julia Quinn and the lush sensuality of Loretta Chase, but I would put her works firmly in the "good" category.

P.S. Fans of Brook and Andrew's storyline that started in "Intentions of the Earl" will be happy to see their marriage progressing nicely as they make some appearance in this book.

Readable but very annoying
By Amazon Customer
If you enjoy books that have the heroine REPEATEDLY running away from her life because of misunderstandings, this book is for you! The premise of the book started off just fine, even though Liberty is 10x more unlikable in this book than Book 1 of the series. She does something stupid, causing a scandal and of course is forced to marry the man she has despised from book one (although the reason why she hates him, as revealed in this book, is VERY lame). They go through the beginning of their marriage with more drama then a soap opera. It started out okay with very typical romance novel misunderstandings happening, only to have more misunderstandings happen again and again and again. Some of which were so far fetched that i just wanted to shake the main characters and just tell them to actually talk to each other! I was so fed up by the end of the book, that I only skimmed through the last 3 chapters just so i could get to the end. Of course it ends with a happily ever after and a nice segway into book 3. Book 1 of this series was pretty good and i will read book 3 with hopes that it will end the series on a high note, but if you have a choice don't read this book. It will only serve to frustrate you.

Hopi Dictionary/Hopìikwa Lavàytutuveni: A Hopi-English Dictionary of the Third Mesa Dialect, by Kenneth C. Hill, Ekkehart Ma

Hopi culture has long received considerable attention from the outside world, but the Hopi language has remained much less well known. This is the first true dictionary of Hopi, containing approximately 30,000 entries. The dictionary is based on the dialect spoken today in villages on Third Mesa and was compiled in consultation with a large team of elder Hopi speakers. Its preparation has involved a comprehensive survey of the ethnographic and linguistic literature to identify Hopi vocabulary, and each item found has been checked against existing Third Mesa knowledge of Hopi. The dictionary is valuable not only for the number of its entries but also for its many illustrative sentences and its abundance of information on aspects of Hopi culture, such as often-misunderstood expressions concerning time and space. Main entries, presented for the simplest and most common forms of words, contain full information on inflection in addition to definitions and examples. Cross-references are made for inflected forms that are not easily predictable, such as plurals, less common variants, and combining forms. Many definitions are illustrated with line drawings. The volume also features an English-Hopi word-finder list and a sketch of Hopi grammar, which makes it possible for the user to determine the structure of almost any Hopi sentence. An invaluable reference in Uto-Aztecan languages, this dictionary permits informed reading of Hopi texts. It is a definitive source for understanding not only a language but also a way of life.

Very good dictionary.
By Thomas Martin
This is an excellent very large dictionary, with both a very large Hopi-English section, giving example sentences, and a little smaller English-Hopi section, without example sentences. At the end is an extensive Sketch of Hopi Grammar, and indexes to the grammar. Very useful. Great for native speakers of English, though less great for native speakers of Hopi if they don't know English well, since pronunciation of English words is not indicated. And there is no sketch of English grammar either. But of course most speakers of Hopi know English well.

Prohibitively Expensive
By Robertson
I am in the process of learning the Hopi language, and this seems to be the only dictionary available. This book has been extremely useful. My only complaint is the ridiculous price. Why are books on rare languages so expensive? Don't we want anyone to learn them?

Legends of the Fire Spirits: Jinn and Genies from Arabia to Zanzibar, by Robert Lebling

When Westerners think of a genie, the first image that comes to mind may be Barbara Eden in her pink harem pants or the illuminated blue buffoon from the animated Disney film Aladdin. But to the people of the Arab and Islamic worlds, the picture is dramatically different. Legends of the Fire Spirits looks beyond Westernized caricatures to immerse the reader in the vibrant lore of the jinn—the wondrous, often troublesome, and sometimes terrifying spirit beings of ancient Arab and Islamic tradition.

Robert Lebling delves into long-lost accounts, medieval histories, colonial records, anthropologist’s reports, and traveler’s tales to explore the origin and evolution of legends that continue to thrive in the Middle East and beyond. He cuts through centuries of Orientalists’ cultural presumption to craft a study that stands apart from the overwhelming body of literature concerned with religion in the Middle East.

A captivating synthesis of history and folklore, this is the most diverse collection of jinn lore ever assembled in one volume. From ancient scriptures to The Arabian Nights and beyond, and with a foreword by acclaimed filmmaker Tahir Shah, Lebling has constructed a comprehensive account that not only transcends geographical borders but also spans some four millennia.

Review
Praise for Legends of the Fire Spirits

"The most complete compendium of research on the jinn to date." —UFO Digest

"Legends of the Fire Spirits is a long overdue compendium of the knowledge and history of the jinn. It will enrich the reader's knowledge of human history more than one might imagine. The book also can serve as a lifelong reference to the mysteries of the Middle East and their influence on both Western and Eastern cultures." —Arab News

"Robert Lebling’s exhaustive and very readable account of jinn lore and legends traces the fascinating history of these strange beings . . . Mortals interested in knowing more about these magical creatures must content themselves with Lebling’s absorbing study." —Times Literary Supplement

"A fantastic introduction to a big Middle Eastern subject—the belief in Jinn, spirit people who live in parallel to us yet are invisible to humans. Most cultures have had traditions about 'little people' or something similar, but in the West we've pretty much ruled it out—"Faires at the bottom of the garden." . . . Perhaps the fairies aren't at the bottom of the garden after all, but right next to us. An excellent read—highly recommended." —Jason Webster, author of the Max Cmara detective novels

Opening cultural curtains
By Amazon Customer
This is a great book about fire spirits or jinn. It's about their possible origins, their families and religions, their interaction with humanity, their malevolence and kindness, likes and dislikes.

It appears that jinn don't like citrons (the fruit, not the Citroen car) although they probably don't like Citroens either because they dislike iron; they also dislike salt. Hence, perhaps the use of horse shoes above doors and various superstitions about throwing salt; in Japan, they throw salt to purify a sumo ring. The next time you meet a jinn please ask him or her why they don't like salt when they like the sea; they also like living at crossroads, in ruins, in sewers, down wells, in or beside rivers, in caves and in houses which have been empty for a while; which makes the excellent introduction by Tahir Shah relevant as he experienced jinn while renovating a house in Morocco.

Having read this book, there seem to be few qualities possessed by jinn that do not play on human hopes and fears. They live for a long time, yet most of us have puny life spans and fear death; they often have fabulous wealth or are able to produce it in an instant as in the tale of Maruf the Cobbler; they have incredible skills and can make jewelry which cannot be surpassed in beauty by human beings; they can travel at impressive speed. Yet, as Robert Lebling points out, they are very human; they have families, religions, although they live longer than us they are not immortal, they belong to large social groups and are tribal; but, whether or not they can enter paradise is disputed. Whether their leader, Iblis, is a fallen angel or was born a fire spirit is also disputed.

The real problem for would-be geni spotters is that jinn seem to be most visible to genuine sufis and prophets; in other words to men and women at the very top of the human pyramid who have the capacity to see them; the wise. It's perhaps not a coincidence that when King Solomon was asked which gift he would like, he chose wisdom and that he had power over the jinn who helped him to build his temple. The book also points out that humans can marry jinn and that Bilqis, Queen of Sheba (King Solomon's wife) was perhaps half jinn.

If asked, who lives in a ruined castle in desolate mountains? Who cannot be seen in a mirror? Who has lived for centuries? Who can cause a change in local weather and shape shift from human to animal? Who comes out at night and sucks human blood? You might answer Dracula and it's quite possible that Bram Stoker (author of Dracula) was inspired by the nineteenth century poet laureate, Robert Southey, whose eastern interests are explained by Robert Lebling; but if you asked these questions in the east the answer would almost certainly be 'a jinn'; and there are many fascinating cross-cultural aspects to this book.

But what are jinn? Are they real? Are they allegorical and symbolic of psychological behaviour? Are they cunning literary devices? Are they a means of reconciling happenings we don't understand? Are they mere superstition? Are they spirits from a parallel world? After all, they are mentioned in the Quran and the Quran informs us that Allah is Lord of the Worlds (note the plural: Worlds; which may include a world for the jinn). Or, are they all of these and more? Whatever they may be, having read this book, you'll be able to make a better decision. There's so much here, it's a great book, it will make your mind fly like the most aerobatic fire spirit.

The Real McCoy
By S. Cranow
There are only two books written about the Djinn that are widely available for Western audiences . This book and another called "The Vengeful Djinn" . I am going to recommend that you read this book. Robert Lelbling tackles the subject of the Djiin both in-depth and broadly. This book goes into the history of the Djin that predates Islam. The author covers the demons and spirituality of the civilizations that came before The Muslim Arab civilization. Such cultures would include Mesopotamians , Hebrews, Egyptians, Greek and Romans. The book also surveys a wide array of Islamic countries where the Djin have been know to appear.. Every Muslim country in North Africa, Israel/Palestine, Iraq, Jordan Arabia , Yemen, Nigeria and Zanzibar all have Djinn stories.

The origin of the Djin predates Islam and were thought to have been started uder the Sumerians who believed in their share of night Demons. When the Chaldeans from the Arabian peninsula took over they brought with them an even deeper belief of Demons.
The Mesopotamians believed in lilin or night demons that drained the blood of humans and fornicated with them. This is where Lilith arose from. Another demon discussed was Pazuzu the demon of the south west wind. With him came disease and pestilence. The Djin are made of hot wind or smokeless fire. Their bodies are not dense like ours. Angels are made of light while we humans are made of clay.

Demonology went even further with Greeks and Romans who believed that everyone had a daimon that was for good and a daimon that was for bad. In Islam this translated to a Quarin for males and Quarina for females. Quarinas also cause discord between husband and wife and function much like Lilith did. The Romans also believed in Gennii or Genus that was in charge of watching an area. The Djion to watch areas. Some Djin live underground while others hover in the air. Many live in cave, latrines, graveyard and other desolate places.

There are several types of Djinm. Ghouls are flesh eaters and raid grave yards at night. They are also known to marry men. Shaitans are the offspring of Iblis. Ifrits stay with a person like a guardian angel and feed off blood. THE worst Djin are the Marids, who hate humans with a passion.

As noted before the Djin used to have control over the earth until God created man which everyone ws supposed to worship except that Iblis and the Djin would not have it. The Djin were driven from the planet by the angels and only a few remnants of them were left behind. Later on they formed a resistance on an island. Iblis lead them and changed his name to Azazil.

There are some good Djin that try to help people and who believe in Islam. THera re some that are Jews and Christians . In Andalusia they were knows for protecting Sufi saints and giving knowledge to people like Paracelsus and Pope Sylvester.. The book delineates some herbs like Dragon's Blood and Asfoetida that help keep the Djinn away.
If you are interested in learning about the Djin and from knowledgeable Middle eastern sources then this is your book. No New Age hooey.

Jinn and the Human Race
By Ita
How do you write for sceptical westerners about things, beings or forces so subtle they are undetectable by ordinary human senses and, until now, by scientific instruments? Robert Lebling has done just that, undeterred by the risk of incurring ridicule from those of us unwilling to concede that there is much we still do not understand; but who saw Osama bin Laden as the embodiment of evil clashing with good in the form of Barack Obama; and the marriage of Kate Middleton to Prince William as the union of a mortal with a supernatural being.
`Jinn' is a word derived from an Arabic root which means to `conceal' or `cover with darkness'; but the darkness is not total. The spirits created by God from smokeless fire can take on the features of any living being they desire apart from those of a prophet or imam, but when they interact with humans, who are more dense and made from clay, there is an energy change. Robert Lebling has searched for these energy bursts in pre-Islamic writing, the Koran, the Hadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammed), folktales, history, European literature, the Internet and the writing of maverick scientists. With time and space compressed a picture emerges, fashioned from metaphor and legend.
Although Jinn are physically fundamentally different from familiar living creatures, we see a race similar to us in many ways, sharing our emotions of envy, love, hatred, fear resentment, anger. Some Jinn are helpful to mankind. Others are powerful and malicious. From them humans have found it necessary to devise forms of protection, and not just in Muslim countries. Here in the West people wear blessed medals, bless themselves with holy water and put sprigs of conifer, blessed on Palm Sunday, behind pictures as protection against evil spirits.
It wasn't until after I started to read this book for the second time that I really appreciated how extraordinary it is. It deserves to be read for several reasons. Besides being entertaining it provides, as Tahir Shah writes in his introduction, `a window into Arab and Islamic society that is usually clouded over, opaque to all except Arabists and scholars of Islam.' By gazing through this window with an open mind we may discover something useful. Spiritual forces, whether we call them Jinn or not, whether they are material entities, a form of electromagnetic radiation, thoughts, or none of these, are complex and inescapable. Robert Lebling concludes that we may never really understand them, but `we can understand how they affect us, and how we respond to them and how we interact with each other as we try to deal with them.'

This M/M novella is the first instalment in a fantasy series.
Basic plot and world building are interesting and the author has the raw talent of a born storyteller.
While the lead develops amorous feelings for his male best friend, bigoted readers need not worry about it. The most they do is kiss and those kisses are only mentioned and not described. Therefore I see no reason why the author should have tagged his work as gay-themed.

Unfortunately there are several problems and they must be mentioned because they stand in the way of enjoyment:

- editing is quite sloppy. There are typos, word-switches ('cease' instead of 'seize' was recurrent), grammar mistakes and consistency issues far exceeding what may be tolerated in an indie work;

- writing is good here and there but more often clumsy and clunky. The author should make the effort of revising his technique to achieve a better fluidity.

- the fantasy genre is known for its descriptiveness. In every work, many pages are dedicated to characters' training, travel experiences, military tactics, battle scenes, meaningful dialogues. In mediocre books they are usually very boring but they are the warp of successful ones.
Mr Burgess seems to have nor time nor patience to put down these moments and it detracts from the story: things happen too fast. There is a reason why a fantasy volume usually exceeds 400 pages often topping 600; the feeling of reading a draft is thus difficult to avoid.

I think the author should enlist the help of a competent editor and try and rewrite this series giving it more breath and scope. It would be worth it.

What a great, addicting, read!
By Wolf
This is a enthralling epic that you cannot put down. Characters grow on you quickly, and before you know it you are sucked into the story and you can't stop turning the pages. It's a quick gripping read that will have you glued to your kindle like a neodynium magnet on a steel frame! haha. Really, it's a great book. The story is really one of a kind, and at the same time it's a classic about how someone who comes from nothing can save the world. The book is riveting, endearing, and totally loveable. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the book, it really tugs at your heart strings. You suddenly are completely invested in the lives of these characters, and their wants and needs become suddenly important to you. I love the story arc, when the reader thinks you are about to zig, the author zags. It's surprising, compelling, and utterly addictive. This book will find a home in your heart. The story is emotional, epic, and unexpected. The characters become like welcome house guests you learn to love.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book! It's a quick read that will soon have you aching for the author to release his second book! It's addicting and lovable, and I can't say enough good things about it. :) I'm recommending it to all of my friends, it's a great book, and I truly love it and all of the characters in it! ^^
