The Theater of the Absurd Strikes Again!

"The Dumbwaiter" (1957) is a long one-act play by Harold Pinter displaying his Theater of the Absurd traits, but in a more tightly focused view than in some of his other work. Ben and Gus are waiting in a play reminiscent of Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" (1952). They are like Estragon and Vladimir in the Beckett play except those two hapless souls are still waiting.
Ben and Gus are sticking around to do a job, something sinister, apparently a killing, but these two hit men, if that's what they are, are rather pathetic. There's an antipathy between the two. They have revolvers. In the claustrophobic set, a basement room, the two men get cryptic and hilarious food order notes from the dumbwaiter up above. They send up little snacks that Gus had brought with him (the food proves to be unsatisfactory). A speaking tube also connects them with whomever. Ben is the leader, and his cohort Gus seems like a fumbling clownish oaf.
As usual the dialogue has its comic riffs, repetitiveness and inanity. The two petty criminal are under the direction of a boss just as Goldberg and McCann were in Pinter's "The Birthday Party".
What happens is puzzling and baffling in this dark comedy. There is an undertone of violence with terror lurking. Neither character is quite sure of anything. Things are unnerving, uncertain, and menacing. The unknown is often scarier than the unknown. In a Pinter play people don't seem to be able to exert their wills; they are manipulated and toyed with just as Pinter is manipulating and toying with the audience.
It has been said that Pinter's characters lack sympathy for each other, spirituality or any craving for it. It's an existential world. The evil presence offstage must be obeyed. It's a mystery within an enigma, but fun for adventurous theatergoers.

You get a bit out of your depth sometimes, don't you?

One review, until now, is pathetic. This book, featuring two of the absurd, menacing, weighty master's early works is terrific.

The Caretaker, along with The Homecoming, The Birthday Party and Old Times is one of Pinter's best, ultimately important, works. It is in my opinion one of the great post-WWII English plays.

The Dumb Waiter, similar to The Caretaker in it's setting and brother-like characters, while being a long one-act, is creepier still and more enigmatic.

The Caretaker is about a vagabond named Davies, who is taken into a run-down room in a run-down house by Aston, who lives there, and collects things in it, and is the brother of Mick, who owns the building. Initially the relationship between Davies and Aston is kind, generous and progressive. Davies, used to trudging through life homeless is taken aback at the trust and goodwill offered by Aston. When Mick arrives later, Davies must feel out the differing attitude, as Mick looks after his brother, and isn't so easily trusting of the ragged and scruffy Davies. But eventually Aston seems odd (and delivers an amazing monologue testifying to his possible insanity), and Mick more level headed, and both at different times offer Davies a job in the house, as Caretaker.
But Pinter being Pinter, the goodwill is possibly unreal, or something else entirely. There is a vague confusion to the play, a lack of specifics, and the characters, in classic masculine style, only say what they think they need to, i.e.:

Davies: What do you do-? What do you do...when the bucket's full?
Pause.
Aston: Empty it.
Pause.

Davies, somewhat boxed into the house by weather and possibility never knows his place, as the brothers, who rarely are in the room together, keep him off balance. The truth becomes elusive, as do the facts. One never knows one's place, or how each feels about the other. A scary moment comes when Davies, flustered by the erratic behavior of Aston, calls him "nutty" to his brother, Mick. To which Mick replies: "You get a bit out of your depth sometimes, don't you?"

The Dumb Waiter is more absurd then The Caretaker. Two guys, possibly hitmen, possibly waiters, staying in a basement room, awaiting orders to do something, must contend with a dumb waiter that begins to descend with notes requesting food. The room clearly not a kitchen, and they not sure what is going on upstairs, instead put the little food they have in the dumb waiter, which ascends and descends several times. The trapped nature of Gus and Ben lends that Pinter menace to the story. Each has a gun, and seems ready to kill. But a lack of information, either known to them, or expressed by them so we know, keeps the lid on the proverbial pot.

These both are classic plays. I highly recommend this book.

Outstanding miniature study in character (No spoiler)

The Caretaker is an excellent Pinter play where his famous deliberate pacing is used to tell the story of a power struggle between a homeless man trying to manipulate his way into taking over a house. For the Caretaker, Davies, it is the hope of a place to stay a roof over his head. For the older brother, MIck it's a chance to make something of a house gone to waste. The younger mentally disturbed brother, the most vulnerable, is at the mercy of his brother Mick. The play is a fascinating balance of power as the pendulum swings towards one and then the other. No one is really sure who is in charge of the situation until the very end.

Best Book for Beginners Learning Russian from Scratch

I've compared dozens of books about learning Russian from scratch, and this one is the best. There are advanced grammar texts out there which have more information, but they aren't geared toward beginners. The beauty of this book is that if you know absolutely nothing about Russian, you can start at the beginning and work your way through each lesson in the order presented, and by the time you're done, you will have a solid understanding of Russian grammar. Not only that, but you'll have a vocabulary of some of the most useful words in the Russian language.
When I first started studying Russian, I had no teachers or classes or cassette tapes to help me. My eighth grade math teacher gave me a copy of the original version of The Penguin Russian Course, which was compiled by J.L.I. Fennell and published in 1961. The methodology was logical and straightforward with no spoonfeeding or watered-down grammar lessons accompanied by cutesy cartoon pictures. In each lesson, you would first memorize a list of new vocabulary words. Then you would study several concise grammar principles which were clearly explained. Third, you would examine a brief Russian text which incorporated the new vocabulary and applied the new grammar principles which you had just learned in the lesson. Finally, you would translate an English text into Russian to test yourself on the new vocabulary and grammar. At the end of the book was a key which showed the correct translation of the English text into Russian, so you could check yourself.
This new version of the Penguin Russian Course is not as concise and straightforward as the first version, but it's actually better. Nicholas J. Brown has incorporated the original structure of J.L.I. Fennell's version enough that the effectiveness of the lessons is preserved, but Mr. Brown has added much more in this modern version. He has provided numerous additional Russian texts and conversations so that you can see how the vocabulary is used in context. And in this new version, the answer keys at the back of the book show the Russian-English translation as well as the English-Russian translation of the exercises.
The best part of this book is the translation exercises at the end of each lesson and their corresponding answer keys at the back of the book. Translation is probably the best way to test whether or not you really understand the grammar and vocabulary taught in the lessons, and this book gives you plenty of opportunities to test yourself in this manner.
Another advantage of this book is that it's small enough to carry anywhere, unlike those bulky Russian 101 textbooks used in college classes which use a slow, watered-down, almost infantile approach to teaching the language.
If you want to learn Russian, buy this book and work through the lessons. The only major drawback is that you'll never really learn proper pronunciation without listening to native Russians speak the language, and this book doesn't have tapes to accompany it. Other than that, however, you won't find a better book for beginners who want to learn Russian.

Worthy of attention from serious students

It's easy to see from the reviews for this book that there are more than one type of language learner. If you want Russian spoon-fed to you, forget it and learn Italian, French, etc. Russian only becomes usable when you have all of the inflected endings organized and stored in your head. And the only way to accomplish that is by studying with some degree of passion.
I used this book along with the 3 pimsleur sets on russian and now have a very strong foundation to proceed into advanced studies. This book has a good mix of grammar and texts to translate. I never felt overwhelmed. That said, I progressed on a two-steps-forward and one-step-back basis. You will too if you want to learn Russian, so don't sweat it. It's normal. I was relieved when I got to chapter 10 or so and the book said something about "you have now met X number of words and have probably forgot most of them. That's ok. Just learn them again and it will get easier."
My one regret with the book: I wish there was a workbook for more exercises. The exercises in the book are good, but I had to make up my own to really become accomplished at slinging those endings the way I wanted.
Stay away from this book if you are looking for nice phrases for travelers. This book will teach you only if you put the right kind of effort into your studies.
I have dozens of books on Russian and this is the one that taught me what I needed to know.

Solid Introduction

The main strength of this book is its completeness. By using this book alone it is possible to obtain a good understanding of basic Russian. No other reference is necessary, thus for a single volume course this has no equal. By any standards this is a good book.
There are weaknesses. Dependent on your point of view, the focus on an academic type course of instruction with rigorous grammar might not appeal to some (and attract others), as stated in the introduction, one of the books objectives is to bring the reader up to UK 'A' Level standard (Roughly equivalent to the first two years of an American College course). This isn't one of those 'jaunty' conversational type courses, as reflected perhaps in the lack of an audio medium such as a CD or Cassette being available.
I'd recommend this book to Russian Students and those wanting a sound academic grounding in Russian. For those whom wish to just converse in basic Russian (lets say for a tourist or business trip) it may be better to look at other courses that are combined with an Audio package.
However if you have additional access to a Russian speaker or are based in Russia I'd not hesitate to recommend this book as your first choice of instruction.
Again, as a single volume, and if I could have only one Russian book this would be it. No question about it.
For those reasons I'd give it 5 starts for a self-contained course, 4 stars for an academic instructional course, and 2 stars if you just want a quick intro to conversational Russian.

Dr Jenny O'Dea has been an Associate Editor for Health Education Research (Oxford University Press) for several years. She has a Masters in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley and a PhD in Medicine from the University of Sydney in which she focused on the improvement of body image among young adolescents. Recent research from Dr O'Dea's group of collaborative researchers and students includes a 3-year national Australian Research Council study titled "Youth cultures of eating" and a 5-year study of children's growth, weight, health and participation in physical activity. The results of these two large, national studies add to the research about childhood obesity and the important role of nutrition educators, health professionals, teachers, parents and the media in the promotion of healthy eating and physical activity among young people.

Great for friendship and self-esteem discussions

I usually don't purchase new books without seeing reviews but I immediately bought this one and I wasn't disappointed. Julia Cook's books have been useful. As an elementary school counselor I'm always searching for books on friendship. There don't seem to be many out there on how to make friends and what to do if you have friendship problems. Although I also recommend "How to be a friend" by Marc Brown and "My friends and me" by Pat Thomas. I look for books that will appeal to 6-8 year olds. I've already used this book with groups and it's worked out well.

So for the plot: The Brown colored pencil feels alone and left out. A few of the other colored pencils tell him he needs to be a good friend to make friends. Each of the colors has a specific positive quality. Brown is a combination of all the other colors so he has those qualities within him. He takes their advice and begins to recognize his own strengths. He changes his ways and does things to try and help out the other pencils. He feels better about himself and now has friends.

The story did repeat some things to try and make the story hit home but I'm not sure it was necessary. A couple of pages almost felt out of place and were a little too long. For instance, towards the end Brown listens to a presentation on how to take over the art supply market. He was doing this to support his friend but I don't think the audience this is geared to would understand the situation, nor did it add to the story.

Overall, the book has a good message that resonates with children. It is easy to use in discussion regarding friendship and self esteem and I would buy it again.

Perfect book for my 6 year old in first grade

Perfect book for my 6 year old in first grade. He has had trouble making friends at school. This book goes over how to be a good friend and what makes each crayon in the pencil box unique. Brown learns what is unique about him and what he can do to help the other crayons. Brown use to complain and carry around a lot of negative energy that the other crayons didn't like. This book is perfect for our situation!!

Some of the reviews said this book is racist. ABDOLUTELY NOT!!! I would honestly ignore the one racist comments when choosing this book. All of the colors in the are talked about. Brown is the main character.

The book goes over negative energy and how to be positive. I love this book! I was skeptical about the reviews that said it was A racist book I bought this book half thinking I may need to return it. This book beyond surpassed my expectations. Very happy with this book.

More of a self esteem book than a making friends book

I bought this for my 5 year old. He has some issues with empathy and thinking about other people, so I'm concerned that he is going to have trouble making real friends in school. He does NOT have any issues with self esteem, if anything he has the opposite problem.

I thought this was a book about how to make friends. But really, it's a book on why friends are important and that you are special and deserve to have friends. The book is very very wordy. There are a couple of entire pages that could easily be removed from the book without affecting the storyline. It's just too long for young children.

Also, there's no real practical information. The first half of the book covers how the brown crayon doesn't have any friends and basically hates himself. Then by talking to a bunch of other crayons, he discovers that he is worthwhile after all, and he starts to make friends. But I didn't feel there were enough details in actually helping a young child make friends. One of the themes was "to make friends you need to be a good friend", which is awesome! but the examples and guidance were terrible. There are extremely specific examples - like the brown crayon listens to another crayon's crazy business plans. My son is too young to understand that this is trying to say that you should think of others and listen, even if you aren't super-interested. Honestly I would have been better off just making a list of friend-making skills and reading them to him and giving him some general examples.

I actually felt that improving your self esteem was discussed more than making friends. Accepting who you are and learning to like yourself were major themes. If that's what you are looking for - I still can't hardily recommend this book because I feel it is too long unless your child is a bit older, in which case they might find the characters too childish. 3 stars is listed as "It's ok" and that's exactly how I would describe this book.

Recent scholarship has explored the representations of witchcraft and malfeasance in English street literature; until now, however, the role of music and embodied performance in communicating female transgression has yet to be investigated. Sarah Williams carefully considers the broadside ballad as a dynamic performative work situated in a unique cultural context. Employing techniques drawn from musical analysis, gender studies, performance studies, and the histories of print and theater, she contends that broadside ballads and their music made connections between various degrees of female crime, the supernatural, and cautionary tales for and about women.

A young Bridget?

There is the usual praise for the author's other books in the beginning of It's Okay, I'm.....and somewhere it says that Georgia, our heroine, is a youg Bridget Jones. And that is not all that wrong.
The book is about Georgia, aged 14 and her teenage trouble with parents, littlesister, boyfriends, school, looks etc.
The plot or non-plot of this book would have been utterly boring, if it wasn't for the very funny use of the English/British language. I am also sure every girl aged 12-99 can relate to some of Georgia's antics if not all of them.
I bought this book thinking it was about a young woman, not a teenage girl, but I nevertheless liked the book. I think all teenage girls will love it.

i think all the Georgia Nicolson books are great, for all those teenagers that really enjoyed Princess Diaries and The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants! (or who didnt, it doesnt matter)

because i have read them all, and loved them all!!!

please read this, you will have a big laugh!
