Released in 1971 as Black Nationalism and the Revolution in Music, this book is essentially a compilation of articles published in Jazz Review. LJ's reviewer took exception to Kofsky's racist notions but nonetheless asserted that he wrote well (LJ 6/1/71). This would make a good companion to Kofsky's recent Black Music, White Business: Illuminating the History and Political Economy of Jazz, also from Pathfinder.

The African-Americaness of jazz

The late Frank Kofsky was a radical historian, and a lover of Jazz. This book is based on articles he published in Jazz magazines in the middle 1960s, interviews he did with Coltrane.

Despite its weaknesses, this book is important in that it stresses the importance of the African American nature of Coltrane and modern jazz, and its links to Black militancy in the 1960s. It places Jazz not just in the historical links to aFrican American musical survivors but the Jazz of the 50s and 60s in the context of the ferment in the Black community arising from the civil rights and Black power movements.

As such, it is a good answer to the current Wynton Marsalis-Stanley Crouch-Albert Murray mafia's insistence that Jazz is not African American, but a product of 'greatness" of American capitalism and that Jazz needs to acquire the forms, conventions, and practices of European classical music.

. . And this is vital to Coltrane's importance in the advancement of Jazz completely against these conventions.
This book has weaknesses. Kofsy's analysis is distant from Marxist cultural theory, especially as he tries to identify artistic validity with political content. Kofsky seems unaware of the question of class within the African American people or among jazz musicians. Kofsky never really lets the reader know how religion and spirituality became central to John Coltrane and his music in his later years.

Still, this book is part of the defense of the place of John Coltrane in the history of Jazz, and of Jazz's own place in history.

Well-intentioned but misdirected

Kofsky's effort in this book is to tie the avant-garde jazz music that emerged in the sixties to the politics of black nationalism that were boiling up at the same time. His essential thesis is that jazz is an African American art form that is and always has been by its very nature a form of protest against the physical and ideological shackles placed on black people by an oppressive society. He asserts that the musical freedom that black jazz artists searched for in the '60s went hand-in-hand with the efforts of Malcolm X and others to create a new, Afrocentric society that would presumably free black people to nurture their cultural identity.
As the title suggests, Kofsky saw John Coltrane as the key figure in this movement. He is unstinting in his praise of Coltrane's music, so much so that even I, a hard-core fan of Trane's for more than 30 years, found myself yearning for a more leavened approach. Kofsky certainly knows Coltrane's music well. But he makes, in my opinion, a fatal error in investing that music with a political consciousness and aim that Coltrane himself never professed. In fact, in an interview included in the book that Kofsky conducted with the saxophonist, he (Coltrane) makes clear that he does not subscribe to Kofsky's thesis, despite the writer's repeated attempts to put words in his mouth. Some years ago, I secured a tape of this interview, and it's startling to hear how insistent Kofsky becomes in attempting to lead his subject where he clearly doesn't want to go.
Another key weakness of the book is that it gives short shrift to so many fine musicians of the period. Charles Mingus, for example, a key influence on the avant-garde, is barely mentioned. If you read the book and had never heard of Miles Davis, you'd come away thinking that he was just another planet circling the Coltrane star instead of one of the formative influences on the saxophonist himself. And of course solid and influential musicians who made incremental contributions to the music -- Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Lee Morgan, Jaki Byard, Herbie Hancock (the list could go on and on) -- receive nary a word. Meanwhile, Archie Shepp is lionized, first and foremost because of his radical politics.
Lest anyone think I'm taking a shot at Archie, I hasten to add that I think he's made a number of fine albums, and I own quite a few of them. The point is that one realizes early on that Kofsky is less interested in understanding the creative process and analyzing the relative musical merits of jazz musicians than he is in developing a social critique and applying his political litmus tests to the musicians of the era. Viewed in this light, the book is not very informative. A long critique of the "cockroach capitalism" practiced by jazz club owners 40 years ago doesn't carry much weight today. And alas, the socialist revolution that Kofsky proclaimed was imminent has somehow failed to come to pass, yet jazz has endured. Is there a lesson there?
In the end, Kofsky manages to minimize the artistry of the musicians and make them appear to be guided inexorably by Marxist ideology. That's pretty flimsy and it certainly in my mind is a disservice to the many great musicians of the '60s who could never be pinned down to one influence. In fact, their stubborn resistance to being pinned down, and to be endlessly open to new ideas, is precisely what made them jazz musicians.
For a much better insight into the life of the jazz musician, I would suggest A.B. Spellman's "Four Lives in the Bebop Business," and for a balanced analysis of Coltrane's music, Eric Nisenson's "Ascension."

This book got me listening to jazz and enjoying it

Not a biography of Coltrane, this is a really interesting discourse on jazz as it evolved through the racism, civil rights movement and African liberation struggles of the times. Kofsky (the author) was a protagonist in the jazz world and although his obsession with petty quarrels among critics can get a bit wearing, the book is so grounded in the real, lived-through conflicts sodden in the overt racism of the music establishment, it is a good read. Imagine, many critics wouldn't even admit jazz was Black music - couldn't concede such a contribution from "the Negros"!
Several chapters replete with musical scores were too much for me to understand, since I don't play an instrument, but they clearly round out Kofsky's points on the structure of jazz. Learned all kinds of stuff about how the measured, symmetrical symphony compositions of Europe reflect that society's inner workings, versus the different beat of African music picked up by jazz. Instead of exploring a different take on rythm and sound, early critics hrrumphed and complained of cacophony. The chauvinism is so damn self-assured.
Also has beautiful photos, many taken by the author himself. Proof he was really there through thick and thin.

Kinda Brand New

I needed this textbook for my Statics and Strength of Materials course but the original textbook was just too expensive. I received the book and it felt used, even though I was told it would be brand new. At first i was disappointed b/c the book it's small in size and not at all what i expected. However, powerful things can come in small packages. The nuggets and wisdom in this "small" book have been gems in my life. I am putting into practice many things that i've read in the book. I'm excited for our marriage b/c of the changes i'm making after reading this book.

Those who will find value in this book are those who are looking for change. That change must start from the top, and what better book to help initiate the movement. This book is a great book to start with for anybody interested in Hoshin Kanri. I recommend starting with this book to survey the big picture and then dive deeper into some of the tools if necessary. Cudney does a great job with just enough words and details to communicate the theme without dragging the reader into too many details. The CD with the included templates is a nice bonus, too. In the future I plan to use this book as a training tool and quick reference guide. I believe its best use is as a primer for upper management, since the material flows quickly and the case study presents a sample of application.

Not Enough Recipes

I love Korean food and when I saw the cover of this book, I jumped at the chance. Given that it was on promotion and didn't cost me anything I thought I was on a winner.
Unfortunately the book did not live up to expectations. Firstly there were only 6 recipes and nothing in there that you would not find for free on the web if you typed in Korean BBQ.
I believe in giving all Authors and Cooks a go but I wouldn't recommend this book, especially if you had to pay for it.

Recent Advances in Computational Mechanics contains selected papers presented at the jubilee 20th Conference on Computer Methods in Mechanics (CMM 2013), which took place from 27 to 31 August 2013 at the Poznan University of Technology. The first Polish Conference on Computer Methods in Mechanics was held in Poznan� in 1973. Kindle edition is limited, and it's a bad textbook overall.

The author (or perhaps publisher) have limited the kindle edition licenses to only 2 devices. I like to be able to view e-textbooks on my phone, tablet and laptop so that I can more easily complete readings and assignments on the go, so having to pick 2 of these 3 was aggravating.

As for the more important issues, content and presentation, this textbook leaves much to be desired. It is riddled with typos, which is frustrating, but even more worrisome is the presence of serious bias. The textbook uses point/counter point articles to discuss issues like the benefits/detriments of globalization. Unfortunately, many of these are designed with one point being populated exclusively with 'straw man' arguments. This thread of misrepresenting complex issues arises outside of flawed pseudo-debates as well. Much better alternatives are available.

This book is a very interesting read if you have the time. I'm doing an international business course at university and if you take in to consideration a lot of what they say and apply it it can be a very useful tool. Some of their points are debatable but it's the same with every text book. The point counterpoint sections do a brilliant job of giving both sides of a lot of interesting topics.

Robert Clive (1725–1774), later 1st Baron Clive, is widely considered the founder of British India. He arrived in Madras as a clerk for the East India Company in 1744. No one in the early days of the British ventures in India was as well known or as controversial as Clive became. In our own day, when empire and globalism are witnessed and talked about with ease, Clive’s position as both a servant of the East India Company—which developed into the world’s largest transnational trading company at the time—and an agent of imperialism makes him a surprisingly resonant figure.

About the Author

Jancis Robinson's award-winning books Vines, Grapes and Wine (1986) and the hugely successful Oxford Companion to Wine (1994, 1999, 2006), are landmarks in wine literature. Jancis is the Financial Times' wine correspondent and is critically acclaimed as the "woman who makes the wine world gulp when she speaks" (USA Today) and "our favorite wine writer" (Playboy). Jancis was the first person outside the wine trade to qualify as a Master of Wine, in 1984. She was awarded an OBE in 2003 and the Officier de l'Ordre du M�rite Agricole in 2010 by the French Minister of Agriculture.

Hugh Johnson has led the world of wine writing in many new directions over the 40 years since his first book, Wine, was published. The World Atlas of Wine, his Wine Companion (now in its sixth edition), the annual Pocket Wine Book (since 1977), The Story ofWine, and his memoir, A Life Uncorked, have all been best-sellers. Indeed, his Pocket Wine is the

A beautifully produced, enjoyable and authoritative book

I agree with the chorus of praise for this book. It is beautifully produced and packed with information.

Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson are phenomenally knowledgeable, and they have used that to produce a world-class reference work which is also a pleasure to browse in. It has beautiful, detailed maps and interesting, readable text so that opening a page at random is very enjoyable just for a browse, but there is a lot of proper expertise here with an excellent index and in-depth articles on things like the factors which affect the quality of Bordeaux wines and so on. Each country gets a proper introductory overview and detailed (in some cases like Bordeaux, micro-detailed) analysis of regions, all backed up with excellent maps, pictures of labels and the like.

Truly, anything the non-professional would ever need to know about wine is here, and it's plainly used as a reference by professionals, too. It is, therefore, a very substantial volume at nearly 400 large-format pages, and the only slightly negative thing I have to say about it is that it is heavy enough to be a challenge to the wrists after a very short time - but then extensive reference books have to be weighty, and it's fine to read on a table or your lap. I'm delighted with this book and would warmly recommend it to anyone with an interest in wine at any level: it's crammed with authoritative information and a pleasure to read and to look at.

A not so brief tour of an enormous world of wine

When Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson team up on a book about wine you have high expectations. And they are mostly met here.

The introduction is just that, a quick overview of wine. I love their bluntness: the subtitle to their paragraph on chardonnay reads "Broad, versatile, inoffensive - unless over-oaked".

But this is an atlas, and about 300 pages are devoted to a whirlwind tour of wine around the world. While well done, the top level treatment leaves you realizing just how big the world of wine is today. They could have written ten times as many pages, and still not covered everything going on in wine today.

So take this as an overview. Nearly any region of interest has books--often many, many books--devoted to it. But most people can't spend all their time reading about wine, and this book provides a good overview for deciding where you want to focus on.

Wine at its best!

This book answers all wine questions, even if you are a novice. I already have an earlier version, but wanted the updated information about the latest areas and newest maps of wine producing regions from around the world.
Hugh and Janice are the best. Anyone who wants to LEARN more about wine has to have this book.
