About the Author
Tony Farrell is a graduate of Bath University, where he was fortunate to study with Peter Lutz. His fortunes grew further when he moved in 1974 to Canada and the Zoology Department at the University of British Columbia to complete his Ph.D. degree under the superb tutelage of Dave Randall. In 2004, Tony returned to UBC when he accepted an endowed research chair in Sustainable Aquaculture.
In between these positions at UBC, Tony was employed at the University of Southern California (PDF), the University of New Brunswick (sessional lecturer), Mount Allison University (first real job) and Simon Fraser University (moving through the ranks to a full professor). In addition to highly controlled laboratory experiments on fish cardiorespiratory physiology, Tony is committed to working on animals in their own environment. Therefore, his research on fish physiology has taken him on an Alpha Helix expedition to the Amazon, the University of Gothenburg and the Kristineberg Marine Research Station in Sweden, the Portobello Marine Biological Station in New Zealand, the University of Christchurch and Massey University in New Zealand, the Bamfield Marine Science Station and the Huntsman Marine Station in Canada, the University of Aarhus in Denmark, the University of Adelaide Charles and Darwin University in Australia, and to the Danish Arctic Marine Station on Disco Island in Greenland. These travels have allowed him to work and with many superb collaborators word-wide, as well as study the physiology of over 70 different species of fish. Tony has received a number of awards for his scientific contributions: an honorary degree from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden; Awards of Excellence from the American Fisheries Society for Fish Physiology, Conservation and Management; the Fry Medal from the Canadian Society of Zoologists; and the Beverton Medal from the Fisheries Society of the British Isles.

Challenging! Inspiring! Biblically-Solid!

Facedown is a companion volume to Matt Redman's album of the same name. But don't think it's just a fluffy little book meant to make some money off the popularity of the CD. Facedown is a well-researched, well-written, moving treatise on worship as a response to God's majesty and glory. Redman, an extraordinary songwriter, is also a fine prose-writer. He makes his points clearly and elegantly.
Every worship leader and worship songwriter should read this book. But it's not just for worship insiders. It will help every reader to worship God more fully and humbly.
I highly recommend this book.

Wow...just wow

Matt Redman released his CD "Facedown" and I don't think people really understood what he meant in the title, maybe they did, but they didn't completely understand it. Matt Redman puts that into his words in this book. Give us a totally new perspective of worshipping, on how it should really be. I must agree with him, how he says when you are truly worshipping you will be facedown before the lord, giving him everything you have. Everyone should pick up a copy of this book.

Mit dem milit�rischen Zusammenbruch Preu�ens ger�t Kleist 1806 in mehrmonatige franz�sische Gefangenschaft. 1808 beginnt er mit der Herausgabe der Monatsschrift Ph�bus. Ein Journal f�r die Kunst. Die Urauff�hrung des zerbrochenen Kruges in einer Bearbeitung von Goethe am Hoftheater in Weimar wird zu einem Misserfolg. Kleist begeistert sich f�r die patriotischen Schriften von Ernst Moritz Arndt, scheitert mit dem Plan, unter dem Namen Germania eine politische Wochenzeitschrift mit nationaler Tendenz in �sterreich herauszugeben und wird 1810 Herausgeber der Tageszeitung Berliner Abendbl�tter, die im M�rz 1811 eingestellt wird. Nach Jahren von wiederkehrender Krankheit und Misserfolgen, in denen er mehrfach Selbstmordabsichten �u�ert, nimmt sich Heinrich von Kleist am 21.11.1811 gemeinsam mit seiner Freundin Henriette Vogel, die er ein paar Tage zuvor kennengelernt hatte, am Kleinen Wannsee bei Berlin das Leben.

About the Author
Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) kam nach dem fr�hen Tod des Vaters 1788 in das Haus des Predigers S. Cartel und besuchte das franz�sische Gymnasium. 1792 trat er in das Potsdamer Garderegiment ein. Kleist nahm am Rheinfeldzug (1796) teil, wurde Leutnant (1797) und schied 1799 freiwillig aus dem Dienst aus. Dann studierte er Philosophie, Physik, Mathematik und Staatswissenschaft in Frankfurt/O. (1799/1800). Zwischen 1802 und 1803 lebte er in Weimar bei Wieland , wo er auch Goethe und Schiller kennenlernte. 1804 trat er in den preu�ischen Staatsdienst ein. Er wurde 1807 in Berlin als vermeintlicher Spion festgenommen. 1807-1809 war er in Dresden, wo er mit Tieck verkehrte und mit A. M�ller den "Ph�bus" herausgab. 1810 gab er mit A. M�ller die "Berliner Abendbl�tter" heraus, die schon kurz darauf wegen Zensurschwierigkeiten eingestellt werden mu�ten. Ohne literarischen Erfolg, an menschlichen Bindungen zweifelnd und �ber die politische Lage verzweifelt, nahm er sich gemeinsam mit der unheilbar kranken Henriette Vogel am Wannsee das Leben. Kleist starb am 21.11.1811.

Another amazing accomplishment for an author dedicated to the suffering of a taboo minority. I read the primal wound while in medical school and felt validated for the first time in my life that I was not abnormal, my situation was. With coming home to self, ms. Verrier attempts to bring tools of closure so that social isolation and despair do not make for a sad bookend In an unfulfilled life. She gives me hope that if it can be described, it can be treated. Her analogies to organic brain trauma are especially interesting. My life has been improved by reading her work and I would highly recommend it to anyone struggling with the inherent issues of being adopted. Bravo and thank you again!

Very thought-provoking and heart-rending to me as a mother of an adopted child. Ms. Verrier does present the brokenness and inner hurt of some adopted or foster children in a way that breaks your heart for them, yet gives you (and THEM, if they're old enough to understand & read it) a better understanding of some of the behavioral responses and relationship challenges you witness. This was recommended to me for my teenage son by a friend who, herself, went through Ms. Verrier's two books and found some peace, understanding, and the ability to recognize the pitfalls & causes within her own life toward a path to healing. Highly recommend!

I bought this book thinking it was a self help book as a sequel to Nancy Verrier's book Primal Wound. It was not as I expected. A very complicated
read more geared to the psychological professional than the adoptee as her first book was. I was disappointed.

About the Author
Rob Neto has been sidemount diving for over a decade. He began diving sidemount while living in Arizona after having seen it during one of his cave diving trips to Florida. He was intrigued with it and built his first sidemount rig from a harness and wing he had and went diving. Like everything else he has done with diving, it just took off from there. Over the years he has experimented with various methods and sidemount rigs and currently uses three different sidemount rigs depending on the diving he is doing. Rob currently lives in Greenwood, Florida, located in Jackson County, just minutes from some of the best cave diving in Florida. He dives sidemount almost exclusively even when traveling on recreational dive trips. He is an avid cave diver and cave explorer. He has done exploration in Florida and Mexico and is currently active in several projects. Much of the exploration he does is in sidemount size cave passage and he has even broken a stainless steel belt buckle going through a small, two bottle off restriction! Rob has extensive experience diving both steel and aluminum cylinders, using multiple stage cylinders, and sidemounting his rebreather bailout cylinders. He is an active scuba instructor and teaches a customized, photograph feedback sidemount course.

well-written, informative book

This is a well-written, informative book on sidemount diving. In contrast to many diving related books, including sidemount diving, this book is not generic but specific, and the author has a talent for writing. You don't come away thinking: just wasted money on generalities (that could be summarized in a few pages), and this person should not be writing for public consumption. Steve Lewis, among a few others (now including Rob Neto), are in the category of people who produce well-written, informative diving related books.

Perhaps the audience that would most benefit from the book are beginning and experienced sidemount divers. The second group might include those thinking about sidemount diving and "experts" (sidemount cave divers and instructors). For those with only limited open water experience (e.g., AOW) who are thinking about sidemount diving, the book would be useful in conveying the myriad complexities associated with picking rigs and trimming them out, but they might not be able to fully understand some of the "how to's" in the book. The author provides specific information, in some cases, imbued with subtleties that comes from years of diving/teaching sidemount in caves and open water. It would be unusual for a book that's informative to beginning and experienced divers to be fully comprehensible to open water novices.

The book's strengths include: The author alerts the reader to issues he/she should be cognizant of, in many instances, suggesting solutions without dogmatically fixating on one over others. The author has his preference, based on his own extensive experience, but he leaves it at that. A beginning sidemount diver, reading material on the Internet, will have difficulty distinguishing wheat from the chaff. It is here where Rob Neto's book provides the most valuable service. For experienced sidemount divers, the book provides perspectives on rigging and technique that may further enhance their own diving.

Every book has weaknesses and this book is no exception. In my evaluation (5 stars), the positive far outweigh the negatives, but they are pointed out for future reference and completeness. There are a number of typos (and a repeated phrase) that can be fixed in a second edition. This is common for a first edition book, and, most importantly, the typos are few and obvious (some can change meaning/add confusion) so that they are not distracting. The photographs are in color but some (especially those that help explicate the text) will benefit from better resolution. There is always a trade-off with print cost, but an issue to be considered. A kindle edition may provide an easy fix for an electronic version. One of the strengths of the book is that it is focused and brief (about 120 pages), but invariably some relevant topics are not included as alluded in the subtitle of the book. One of them, under rigging, is the choice of fins which tends to be more of an issue for sidemount than backmount diving. Another is selection cylinder valves. Not major issues but ones that may benefit from being included in an "almost comprehensive guide." Lastly, some of the text describing issues/solutions may be further clarified by including additional pictures/illustrations.

In summary, in this reviewer's opinion, this is the best book on sidemount diving currently available, well-written and informative, that fills a void left by more generic sidemount books and that serves as a reference point for "expert" opinion on the Internet.

Some good tips, but find a good sm intructor

Neto is correct, it's almost comprehensive as a book. Of course, there is no way to learn sidemount from a book. This book merely offers information on configuration and some fundamentals of diving in sidemount. I found that for me, trial and error is the best way. I already have all the DIR techniques for backmount, am very comfortable in either singles or doubles, so the transition to sidemount was mainly about configuration. Once I figured out how everything should work (and why it works - which this book helped with) I just went out and spent about 1/2 hour messing around before I went underwater. Once I went underwater, I felt at home, and sidemount became quite natural for me. I believe in the UTD concept of keeping DIR the same for backmount and sidemount - long and short hoses, maybe a manifold for twins. I don't know if any of the information in this book helped me as I am already a dive instructor and as I said, quite proficient in DIR diving. However, Neto offers some nice tips worth thinking about and trying. And he always says that each diver is different and has to try different things. My feeling is that if you are not a competent DIR diver already, get instruction from a good instructor in DIR skills first (GUE, UTD, etc.) Sidemount is somewhat different, but very easy to pick up if you already have the DIR skills. If not, the skills are the key.

This message is for Rob Neto himself. Please, make the kindle version happen! You would be VERY surprised how many people are declining buy paper books. Paper books are gone. There are many factors envolved. Globalization is one of them. Not all readers live in US!! Im from South America. Please, where is the kindle version of it?

ps: i didnt read the book and my students coudlnt buy it because we dont have acess to paper version. If was kindle, at least 10 new sidemounted divers would be talking about Rob Neto techiciques right now.........

About the Author
Jim Clover is an Adjunct Professor at California State University, San Bernardino and Retired teacher at Riverside County of Education Career Technical Program for 20 years. Coordinator Riverside Medical Clinic's Sports Clinic and SPORT Foundation, Mr. Clover coordinates sports medicine services for 40 schools in Southern California. He invented the Trainer's Angel (a cutting tool to remove football helmets in emergencies) and received the NATA's Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in 2004. In addition to a holding a Master's Degree in Education, he is an NATA Certified Athletic Trainer, Physical Therapy Assistant, and NASM Corrective Exercises Specialist.

Awesome book!

I ordered this book to assist my kids who are in HOSA with sports medicine/injuries competitions. It is awesome! Anyone thinking about going into PTA or sports athletic training, needs a copy of this!

Freud before Fame

Amazing book. Caveat, though: These letters are not the "complete" Freud correspondence to Fliess. One simply does not know which letters are "missing"--that is, other than ALL the letters written by Fliess. However, there are sometimes references to other correspondence written to Fliess by Freud that give assurance that this is not a "complete" set of letters. The translator in this case was not logical in assuming he had finally assembled ALL the Freud letters to Fliess. The translation is excellent; the opinions expressed from time to time in the notes need to be taken with a grain of salt sometimes. In addition, one has to think of precisely what words mean in the context of the times. Words such as "abuse" in this context tends always to mean "masturbation" or "coitus interruptus" or the use of a condom during coitus. Onanism was thought to be very dangerous and also to "abuse" the "natural" tendencies of procreative sexuality, which is deemed healthy. It is indeed a pleasure to read--and study--this original source material. One truly gets a sense of the times in which Freud existed then and of what he was like before he was a "great" man. The presence of a growing family looms large though little is written of it; and the connection between how Freud lived his life and how he at the same time developed his initial theories becomes clearer.

This book is a formidable primary source reviewing the development of Freud's understanding of how people think and act the way they do, an exposition of the patterns so readily observed and hypothetical systems for explaining everyday function as well as diagnosis and treatment. While other books, do a better job of laying out the foundations of psychoanalytic thinking, this one gives real insight into the humanity of Freud, including his love for his children, his longing for friendship, and the heartbreak of trying to transparently and courageously explicate our inner world amid tremendous professional resistance. I felt as if I got to know Freud better and to see how over the course of many years the ideas he worked with were reworked and evolved in the context of his family, his cultural and historical epoch, and through his efforts at self-examination. It is an excellent book and recommended, if not essential, reading.

Freud's self-analysis and beyond

The Freud-Fliess letters are the very foundations of psychoanalysis as most authors agree that it is possible to recognize what Freud developed later. Basically, through those letters Freud analysed himself and the reader can appreciate the very beginning of the great discoveries that Freud did after that period. In particular, Fliess who was Freud's best friend, shared the same scientific enthusiasm of Freud, but the pair ended up building a very odd relationship, namely Freud unconsciously considered Fliess his analyst (even if they were only corresponding) and most authors agree that Freud developed a negative transference that led to the end of the friendship. Anyone interested in the history of psychoanalysis should read this book and explore Freud's passions.
