About the Author
Roger Kamien received his B.A. in Musicology from Columbia and his M.A. and PhD. from Princeton. Kamien taught for 2 years at Hunter College and for 20 years at Queens College, where he coordinated the music appreciation courses. In 1983, he was appointed to the Zubin Mehta Chair in Musicology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In addition to Music: An Appreciation, Prof. Kamien has written numerous articles and reviews, co-wrote A New Approach to Keyboard Harmony, and edited the Norton Scores. He is an accomplished pianist and, in recent years, has formed a two-piano team with his wife, Anita.

Seems pretty dumbed down for a college course

I had to buy this for a college music appreciation class. While not having a 1000 page, 15 pound book in super small print was a nice change, I found the text to be over simplified for a college class. Not sure why the professor chose this particular text, since I'm sure there's more thorough books out there. This book seems to be geared more towards high school kids, or smarter-than-your-average-bear junior high kids.

This book is a good place to start if you want to learn the most basic of basics, especially if you use the CDs also. It's pretty nifty that CDs are incorporated into the text...like, "If you want an example of a Gregorian Chant, listen to track 19, oh and by the way, here's the history of this particular song." It covers a decent amount of ground as far as learning musical terms, characteristics of different kinds of music, etc.

As far as history goes, it's pretty much completely European and American oriented, as if those are the only two places in the world that create music. The history is fascinating, but very limited in scope.

A final tip--buy this book used, like I did. $10 is all you should pay for this book and the CDs, not $100.

Excellent textbook to accompany my music appreciation class last semester. The book is structured in an easy-to-follow format that begins by teaching the elements of music, giving the student a good basis of knowledge to learn about the musical periods.

Nice copy but not exactly as advertised

The copy is in decent used condition. However it is not the adult libretto. It is the junior version. I was looking specifically for e adult version but will keep this junior version in my library as reference.

About the Author

Gregory Andrews received a B.S. degree in Mathematics from Stanford University in 1969 and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Washington in 1974. From 1974-79 he was an Assistant Professor at Cornell University. Since 1979 he has been at The University of Arizona, where he is currently Professor of Computer Science. From 1986-93 he chaired the department; in 1986 he received a distinguished teaching award.

Greg has been on the editorial board of Information Processing Letters since 1979. He was the general chair of the Twelfth ACM Symposium on Operating Systems Principles in 1989 and has been on the program committees of numerous conferences. From 1988-92 he was on advisory committees for the computing directorate of the National Science Foundation. Since 1991 he has been on the Board of Directors of the Computing Research Association (CRA).

Greg's research interests include all aspects of concurrent programming. A long-term project has been the design and implementation of the SR programming language. Current work focuses on the development of Filaments, a software package that provides efficient fine-grain parallelism on a variety of parallel machines.

It's a bit heavy stuff but well organized text book

It is a good book for anyone who wants to lecture in concurrent programming.This book will also help anyone explain the confusion among concurrent, parallel and distributed programs which have been around for the last three decades. The author touches the same three underlying concepts : processes, communication and synchronization. The ten chapters of the book is organized into four parts : basic concepts, shared variables, message passing and pratice. The first part, basic concepts, provides a formal presentation to introduce an assertional proof techniques for sequential and concurrent programming. The second and third parts, shared variables and message passing, elaborates the two major categories of synchronization technique in concurrent programming. Systematic method to solve synchronization problems are described throughout the chapters in two. In the last part, practice, the author provides an overview of five concurrent languanges : Turing Plus, Occam, Ada, SR and Linda. Comparison and performance experiments of all languanges are also provided in the last chapter. The book also includes some classic concurrent programming problems such as critical sections, producers and consumers, readers and writers, the dining philosophers and resource allocation. The 'Historical Notes and References' provided at the end of every chapter is a plus in which it provides citations to relevant literature and more insights to the related subject.

Serious REST

As is common with O'Reilly's Cookbooks, the style of this book is very terse and to the point. There is not much handholding. The intended audience seems to be system architects who already know what they are doing, but who need to know what they should be aiming for when they want to be RESTful. The "recipes" in this Cookbook are more like Best Practices, since figuring out how to implement them is left as an excercise for the reader.

Compared to my previous readings on REST, this book strongly emphasizes the use of consistent XML formats. For me, this was the most important lesson in the book. It is not enough to just use PUT and DELETE: in order to really think in terms of "representations," you need to design meaningful XML. Along these lines, Allamaraju's discussion of the Atom protocol is particularly interesting.

Easy to read, packed full of details and great presentation.

I had been following "What is REST" tutorials online for the last few weeks as I was working on an API for an upcoming SaaS product. Unfortunately there were still some nitty-gritty details behind the tenants of RESTful design that weren't clicking in my brain, making it hard for me to really grok if I was following the intended design guidelines correctly or just faking it like so many other services do.

Picking this book up after a recommendation from an HN reader, I got 4 chapters in before the smoke cleared in my brain and I had multiple "Ah ha!" moments such that the whole concept cleared up for me in a matter of days.

It could be the writing style or presentation, but I just found it really easy to digest and answering all my questions as they popped up in my head.

An excellent resource for anyone else working on RESTful API design.

Get it just for the security chapter

This book provides a clear and concise description of REST and how to make your web services accesible via REST. I got the book because I was struggling with authenticating a Restful web service. The chapter on security is worth the price of the book. I finally understood OAuth's three-legged and two-legged protocols, and was able to build a protected web service API. The book is not tied to a specific programming language, which I think is good as it focuses on core concepts instead. It was easy for me to work on Python and Javascript to get the OAuth operation in place.

I was curious about what would make this e-book worth my buy, as this is one story we all knew well since childhood. But by the time I read it with the excellent graphics which enabled me to picture exactly how Jonah's body looked after his "big fish" experience, among others, I was really touched by the goodness and mercies of God especially to the very wicked and evil people of Nineveh. The icing on the cake for me was the linkage of the fact that like Jonah, Jesus came as our saviour and would also spend 3 days and nights in the heart of the earth. It is therefore a powerful evangelical tool and I recommend it to all.

A MUST FOR MUSIC AND VINYL RECORD LOVERS. Just Loved it!

For vinyl and music lovers this is a must! It explores the resurgence and resistance of the analogue record amidst the digitalization of music. A history of music recordings from records, CDs, MP3 downloads and back to vinyl is masterly described. It very effectively psycho-socio analyses the basic human need to own tangible things and how this gives ourselves an identity and creates a (sub)culture. Ooh!..Too academic you think? No. There is a casual style as well, complete with photos and verbatim interviews with DJs, store owners, collectors that give it a personal, readable feel. If you are a music lover, especially a vinyl fan, you'll see your experiences in every other page. Or one can read it just to understand the human condition that we all are. Never knew this vinyl/music culture has so many layers of humanness! Authors Ian and Dominik do not try to sell the vinyl message but leave You to experience and understand the subject matter. A great, insightful, reflective read. (Am not related or a personal friend of the authors or publisher. Just a genuine reviewer of a read I thoroughly enjoyed)
